The turbo gets covered in soot from the exhaust gases anyway ,whether the egr is allowed to open or shut.
At least if you shut the egr on a clean (possibly from new) engine then you dont get inlet manifold,cylinder head ports ,valves and even piston crowns covered in that muck.We have had cars recovered that the AA or RAC who thought the engines had seized,they had simply stopped being able to turn because the top of the pistons /cylinder were full of the 5h itt.
