This is being collated now, but briefly:

Sunday Night Hotel - Dover. 14th. I have decided against a block booking for this as it's expensive, if you want to book the Premier Inn Central direct, it's currently £35 and a few hundred yards from the ferry terminal. Don't bother with breakfast, too early and we get it on the ferry.
Monday AM ferry (maybe 7.30am)
Monday Night - Troyes, France. MERCURE TROYES CENTRE. 11, RUE DES BAS TREVOIS, 10000 TROYES.

Tuesday Night - Basel

More to follow shortly..!!

Hi Newton,

That's what I am trying to judge at the minute, maybe Basel (Basle) is not the place to be and Drew says it's COSTa Del Swiss, so I am looking around. We need a jump off point for travellers to possibly split at this point and go seperate routes, maybe somewhere in S. Germany, France or N. Italy would suit..??

Cheers

Hi Robert,

I've booked a (family) room at Dover Central (Eastern Ferry Terminal) for the night of Sunday 14th September, ready for the ferry crossing on the Monday AM.

However, in relation to your post above about the ferry crossing time possibly being at 7:30am, could we not make it a bit later in the morning? I may well struggle that early in the morning (ref. our phone conversation), especially after such a long day the day before (on the Sunday). Furthermore, leaving a little later in the morning will allow time for those that are not staying overnight at Dover to get to the port.

As for the proposed 2 nights stay in Basel, are there some 'activities' being planned, hence staying there for 2 nights? Depending on what's being planned and what others do I guess will determine whether I stay there for the 2 nights or just the 1.

Cheers,
T

my suggestion

Calais
Troyes
Colmar
Como (mrs demands it)
modena

Basel is a Birmingham-on-Swiss in my opinion

If its an idea I can expand as I have my route fully planned including roads and possible hotels

Hi T,
That's good you are booked in then, is that you having a party in your "family" room..!!
Regarding the ferry times, for any trip like this we always get a reasonably early start on the ferry. A 7.30am ferry would get us in to Calais at about 10am local time and that is late enough to get a good start. We normally try and get a meeting point on the highway just outside Calais for everyone to catch up.
So this one is an early start, then breakfast on the boat, the others could be a bit later, but we have a lot of people to cater for and not everyone wants to hang around in a morning, they want to get on with their holiday.
So best tip T, get a good reliable alarm and get the hotel early morning call booked..!!
The Basel section is not resolved yet, wherever it will be, will be a jumping off point for driving the mountains, or whatever, different stuff will be going on with different groups..!!
Cheers

Ha ha, I doubt there'll be a party in my room - I'll be shattered from the long day (I'll probably be at the GT Championships with the SCD guys at Donington earlier in the day and then the long slog down to Dover). Looking at Premier Inn's website, it looks as though all the rooms at Dover Central have been refurbished and they are all family rooms, regardless of if 1 or more are booked.

The problem with early starts was not me being lazy, but to do with my illness (as previously discussed). E.g. I was supposed to go to Cholmondely Pageant or Power on Sunday 15th June, doing Dream Rides for charity with Sporting Bears, but despite 4 (yes four!) alarm clocks I still didn't wake until gone 2:30pm, and hence missed the event :(!!!

Basel section (or wherever it end up being) sounds like fun - looking forward to some great driving roads with stunning scenery :D

OK T,
Leave your Hotel room door ajar and I will call in about 7am with a bucket of ice water, will that do the trick Buddy..??:capricorn:

You will manage I'm sure with a bit of prudent planning..??

It might LOL... but then again my brain and body might not function if it's not up to it. My condition is improving so hopefully it won't hamper me too much on the trip. And even if it does put a few spanners in the works, I'm determined to make this trip and get involved in the Centenary celebrations, and be in great company with you guys :)

Cheers,
T

No, just taking a different routing and different timings. Going Hull to Rotterdam and down through Switzerland.

Ah, thanks for clarifying :)

...If you don't mind, I might have to ask you when we all meet up in Italy what your journey over was like, as I've not decided yet which way I'll be travelling back to the UK.

Cheers,
T

Of course not. Happy to share. Avoids the long trek down to Dover, and it's a civilised overnight crossing both ways.
