Alfa luck continues

The engine had had a single cylinder replaced previously. The other work done at the time doesn't look to have been of good quality, leaking water pump amongst other things. I'm wondering whether it was this that was the problem in the first place. Value head shouldn't become detached like that especially not at a constant speed in a constant gear on the motorway. Previous repair had a cylinder head, etc done.

Looking at an engine from a local Alfa spares place, will be from a breaker but if its ok it will mean a reasonably quick process. Well, not counting the time and cost to replace the engine of course.

Sorry to hear Mick but I hope it's a speedy and not too painful process for you

If possible I'd try and get them to source the engine, you might pay a bit more but it stops all the, he said she said, if the same thing happens again.

if you source it and it goes pop you're in the same position, if the engine has 3 months warranty the supplier will blame the fitter and the fitter will say the engine was knackered but supply and fit and it's their problem, and pay on a credit card

Oh, I'm getting them to source the engine alright. I'll pay for it, and on a credit card.

Ok. Engine sourced and ready to fit. With any luck will have the car back by the weekend, or Monday at the latest.

Not this time, I want it running sooner rather than later. However, I am thinking that for the future. I don't have any engine moniker on the boot so ...

I was actually wondering about the 2.0 V6 turbo, supposed to be very smooth and more torque than the 3.0. Would make it fairly unusual as well.

Sorry to hear. We were in a similar situation a couple of months ago (wife's Mito qv). Despite cost of engine etc. still not as much as depreciation hit on a newer car.

The 2.0V6T and the 3.0V6 are the same block so you can bolt the 'T' to the 3L (or the 3.2 GTA if you have no fear of dying) and scare small children and the general public!

Also, if it were me, I would junk the JTS and put a TS lump in, its a much better but thirsty engine.

Given the situation you're in I'd take this as a golden opportunity for cut price upgrades , if you're buying an engine and getting it fitted you may as well fit the upgrade now , as you said, it's only money , a spider with a big engine will be worth more than a spider with a standard engine

Indeed, even a TS is an upgrade on the JTS. The JTS was de tuned versions of the TS, well the power curve is.

It was done to modernise and ageing engine for a final few years.

The TS is as revey as h3ll, where the JTS a linear power curve to meet emissions and better economy. The TS has a power band at 4k rpm and you just keep hitting it again and again. It was thirsty mind.

I don't mind the JTS in mine, it drives well, agree it is very linear, but that is no bad thing. No where as quick ,in a straight line, or as nice sounding as my 3.0, but it's still a nice place to sit.

bad luck man.

Is it strange / co-incidence that a valve would fall off right after cam belt service? Not suggesting any foul play, just wondering why it might suddenly let go.
cam belt broke on my 166 V6, due to tensioner seized (was NOT replaced). In the realm of rock / paper / scissors the valve can never win against piston

I was thinking the same thing. If a cam lock tool wasnt used or a make shift cam lock tool has slipped then a single valve and piston could meet easy enough.

The valve head falling off suggests a shock or stress fracture occurring you will probably never know why. Even if cam belt fitting error caused the piston and valve contact because its wasnt an instant failure it would be impossible to prove.
