dash-cam: worth it?

100% must have. My other half was on a roundabout in the outside lane, the road markings indicated the outside lane for left and straight on, inside was right only. The car on the inside lane decided to go straight on and sideswiped our car.

The car that was in the wrong lane lied and said my other half exited a pub carpark on the other side of the roundabout and pulled into the ride of them. Dashcam footage completely disproved it.

Another incident was I was on a narrow and 3.5T weight limited road, a lorry was oncoming (clearly exceeding the weight limit). I stopped and pulled over as far as possible. The lorry went down the side of me and got even panel front to back. The lorry driver left the scene, but did get out briefly to look and got his face clearly on camera. When it went through the insurance they stated that their logs and vehicle tracking showed the lorry wasn't in the area at the time of the reported incident (they even made this statement to the police). Again sent the dashcam footage, disproved everything they said, claim went 100% my way.

I never drive without one. In the two incidents I've had, both parties have lied to get out of it but the dashcam has won the case.

Reading these with interest; my view still remains that they do not prevent the incident happen, but deal with the aftermath.

Given the claims made I am surprised they (insurance industry) are not making them compulsory... maybe they prefer their clients to lie in the hope ot avoids a payout???

I'd slightly disagree, people do behave a bit better when they notice a dashcam... I have a rear facing dashcam too and when they clock it they do back off. (I don't lane hog btw, just one of your usual BMW, Audi types not being able to do 100+ mph on a busy motorway).

You can upload footage to the police of incidents that did not conclude with physical contact and they do sometimes take action in the way of driver awareness courses/fines/points. These potential consequences in turn could prevent an accident occuring.

Regarding the insurance, it wouldn't suprise me they become mandatory. They save so much back and forth which must waste so much time and money between insurance companies. Some companies reduce their premiums if you have a dashcam now!

The insurance industry now ask at every renewal or quote, if you have ever had a policy cancelled or refused. Presumably if you commit (or are suspected of) insurance fraud, this is going to stick permanently on your file (although there seems to be some thought it is only for 6-years)?

I don't know how far this goes in reality though. In my first incident, the claim went in our favour 100% but the third parties insurance were still protesting innocence and it was some sort of stalemate even after my we were paid out...

I think it should be clean cut, proven to be lying/manipulating the truth, insurance is cancelled/refused and you suffer the consequences. I guess this isn't in the insurance companies interest though as they potentially miss out on selling a policy.

Catman recommended one to me sometime back but silly me forgot to order will look again for details but defo need to get them fitted in the dailys. Might need to think of a removable version for the classics, wire them all up but just swap the camera to the one being used

Well I’m convinced! Any recommendations of one to get??
The company I'm talking to recommends Blackvue cameras, which are quite small. Depending on the model, you can leave the camera recording when you're parked (needs a separate battery) and there's also a model that uploads footage to that there 'cloud' (requires a monthly sub). This means that if your car or the camera gets stolen you can watch the drama unfold / hand it over to plod.

As stated before, I wouldn't be too picky about cost as the quality of the recording is paramount.

If fact, wouldn't it be a good idea for those with dash cams to upload some random non-incriminating footage and the make/model, and resolution of their camera for comparison, rather than rely on manufacturers claims. that way we can judge for ourselves?

Probably a good idea, because I have zero idea if my set up is actually doing anything

The problem is that most ways of sharing degrade the quality. What I upload to YouTube for example is vastly inferior to what I can view off the memory card.

You can screenshot a still, though. Should reveal if index plates are readable (which I think is probably high on the critical list of attributes)

This is worth a watch if you ever use valet parking at the airport - even with this footage so hade ti track the owner of the firm down at home to get him to make good the damage.

Without the dashcam I had no chance.

The footage I have just shared from YouTube shows registration plates - on my PC it’s even clearer.
