4200 oil and oil filter change

For my 4200 is time for new oil and oil filter. I live in central London.

Even if I could I am not bothered to do it myself.
The required fully synthetic oil 5W-40, 9 litres cost 90£ + 20£ for the filter from Europspares. How come independents and Maserati ask nearly 400£?

Questions:
1) Would should be a reasonable price or a good supplier for this job? 150£?
2) I suppose any fully synthetic SAE 5W/40 API SG/CD - CCMC G5 (as recommended by Maserati) will do. I was thinking to get Castrol since is easy to buy anywhere in case of a rare top up. Or should I stick with Agip or Mobil?
3) Is there any alternative to the original filter or a cheap online supplier?
4) Are the 18mm and 22mm copper washer standard ones? By experience I know that if you do not change them every time there is a risk you will have a leak.

I think I will buy the parts myself and get a local shop to do the change under my careful supervision! Suggestions are welcomed!

If you go to Opie Oils or your local Eurocarparts, you can get 2x5L of Shell Helix Ultra for £50

The Oil filter, I would only use the OEM, its just not worth it for a vital component.

As for the copper washers, sure they are a standard size but you can re anneal them, but heating the copper washer and plunging it into cold water. Its always worked without leaking for me.

Oil (I get the VAT off and you can always find a 10% off voucher online for this com

Or support the independents, Opie Oils and using our discount code comes in under £50:

Cheap compared to the 3200 oil change when using the proper Selenia racing (7-8 litres at about £90 quid from Alfa dealer).

I use superformance parts for my oil filters and gaskets.

how do you heat the washers? It is the first time I hear about this trick

Thanks, I only have an electric hob!!! I can try with a torch but they cost only a few pence even at eurospares...but I was wondering if they are special ones or any 18mm and 22mm copper washer will do. I suppose this is the case and any garage should have a few of these? I am just raising these since in the past with my Alfa they changed the oil but not the washers. then it was leaking and I had to pay for a new oil change...
I know you might not change them with no problems, perhaps I was unlucky.

and to answer Safrane...no need for anything else. I have done the air filter, pollen filter and sparks myself. New pads and discs, new clutch, new fluids, new tires...nothing coming up on the maintenance schedule so I think I am fine with an oil change! Unfortunately I do no use my car often but I know that oil will age with time and how this is the most important fluid in a car.

Surely to anneal (soften) a copper washer you need to heat it until a dull red an allow it to cool naturally, not dunk it in water as this will harden it?

Do you recommend 9 litres? Maserati sais you need only 7.3 litres. Still I should have something left for a top up if I buy 8 litres.

I wish I had known about the Opie oils discount - I just bought loads of oils for GS fluid changes!

I used Shell Helix for engine change, Red Line for Gearbox/Diff and Red Line for Power Steering. Filters as per Conaeros advice - OEM all the way (Air & Oil), I haven't done pollen yet. I got these from Eurospares. Opie Oils got a nice deal where you get 1 litre free with 5. It comes in a nice Shell zip up bag - perfect for the wheel well in the boot for top ups.

Next job is air con regas - anyone know where the filling valve is located on a GS?

Make sure you don't buy a Maserati branded pollen filter as they're about £55+ from memory. The Alfa 166 filter is identical - I just bought one on eBay for less than £6 delivered! Might be worth buying some pullers if you don't already have some as the wiper arms have to come off to get to the filter.

I have just sourced the correct Agip Rotra LSX gearbox oil from Italy for less than £50 delivered. Cheaper than the alternatives for the right stuff

Down here in Oceania we use Shell for everything.
We put 10W60 in the dry sump engines and 5W40 in the others.

The ac recharge hi / low points are on the nearside behind engine, remove the plastic covers on that side and you'll see them.

No need to remove the cover.
It is tight in there, and my AC man ended using only one of the two points to recharge my system, both connectors could not be fitted at the same time due to the limited room.

I am buying:
1) the Shell Helix from Opie at 52£ with discount, although the PETRONAS Syntium 3000 from euro car parts with same specs costs only 36£
2) original filter from Eurospares 34£
3) Engine Sump Plug Washer from Eurospares 0.3£. The part number is 10261860 and this is for the sump plug.
What about the washer for the oil tank? The nice instructions from Universal, available on this website, recommend to also drain the oil tank but this does not seem a requirement from Maserati since the service kit does not include the oil tank washer?

And yes, for the air filter you can only get the original Maserati (unless you choose performance filters) and for the pollen filter get an Alfa 166 for less then 10£. Still changing it is a lot of work since you have to take out the plastic corer under the windscreen.

The oil tank holds over half the oil so this obviously needs draining!

Just anneal the old washer or get one from a motor factors.
