Met an Austrian last week whilst playing golf in Spain. When I mentioned our planned road trip this summer, he recommended that I change my intended Lake Garda to Salzburg route to the Grossglockner high alpine road. Has anyone used this and what did you think of it?

Wow - looking at your ex cars, I'm surprised that you could carry enough petrol on board to complete the route!

Yes, I drove up it from the north side back in 1997 in my Alfa 164 2.0 TS, while on holiday in Zell-am-See. It was just a day trip, we went back down the same way. If you can afford the extra time, enjoy driving, the weather's good and the pass is open - go for it. The lower sections on the north side are hugely wide - it gets down to A road width higher up; it's all good road with nothing treacherous. I can't speak for the southern approach.

Here's what you'd miss out on if you take the motorway:

Thanks for the heads up. I bought the day pass ticket last night on-line, together with the Swiss and Italian vignettes that I'll need. If I run true to form, I'll have forgotten something.......

did the Grossglockner last year (I think, maybe 2 years ago) stayed overnight high up in a little hotel and had a wander about at the visitor centre, it it an excellent road and a great area to visit. roads are generally good, and good to drive, even out of the summer, but often get a lot of snow in the winter.
