Fiat Chrysler is to invest around $7 billion over the next four years in re-launching its Alfa Romeo range, with eight new models expected.
The Italian automotive manufacturer said that it expects its Alfa Romeo output to increase from 74,000 cars in 2013 to 400,000 a year by 2018. The launch of the first new model will take place in late 2015, it was announced at a recent ‘investor day’ in Detroit.
The group insisted that “all cars and engines will be industrialised in Italy”. Fiat Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne had previously discussed moving Alfa Romeo’s manufacturing operations overseas, according to industry sources.
Chief technology officer Harald Wester said that 200 engineers had been assigned to the project so far; this figure is expected to rise to nearer 600.
