No sound from any speaker

Hey guys

Been fiddling in my 4200 and replaced the front speakers in my baby and now I have no sound at all from any speaker- nothing, nada, zilch!! I had some before - albeit not great hence the speaker upgrade - and it all still powers up as normal but now with zero sound.

I've checked the fuses in the passenger footwell - no.39 - and also in the boot - no.6 - as these apparently relate to stereo etc but is there a specific one for speakers or are there more fuses, i.e. behind the head unit itself or in the NIT unit in the arm rest?

As always, any advice greatly appreciated!!

I don't know if this fits with your symptom, but I read on one thread that if the speakers are outside the parameters the NIT expects, it can just shut off output to them. Will need to dig out the thread if I can to tell you what parameter it was, but I would guess its e impedance as there aren't that many parameters for speakers. Something to do with the combination of the large speaker and the tweeter.

fuse

This is a picture of the fuse on the back of the NIT. If it blows you will have no sound to any speaker. You will have every other function on your display. Check it and see if you touched your wires when you installed the speakers by accident. Even with the stereo off sometimes the +/- wires hold a charge. I had this old photo in my files. Hi again from Boston, MA! Hope this helps:

Thanks, Craig. That may be helpful. Interesting it never blew when I was making mistakes with mine :)

You know I definitely would have thought the same thing Catman, I was so convinced that I fried the NIT or the display, I ended up paying $500 for a replacement one just to make sure. I could not figure out for the life of me what the heck happened......I had a friend from the forum that was a Ferrari/Mas. tech ask to call me one day. He told me about that dumb fuse they stuck anonymously on the back. He even said to me, "I think it's probably nothing but just check it". Sure enough everything came alive. I sent the display back pictured below, and was quite happy to pay 50 cents than $500! Just a thought, it might not be his case, but the lesson obviously haunted me ever since with these our cars!

I think it's a good spot, Craig. I've been in there twice, and totally forgot it.

Of course, you get a black display with that fuse out, don't you?

Same happened to mine when I put new speakers in, transpired it was a dead short, caused by me - wire was pinched when putting back door panel.

Yes, I think you are right. Well, everything on the display worked except the radio, I think that went black when you switched over to it. I just read the OP, you're right, he stated it powered up, so it would definitely come down to something else he did. The fuse controls all of the radio functions not just the sound alone. So if he can see the radio functions like this below then it has to be something else.

ahhh....I see it's the silver. It made it look white with the sun shinning across it! It gives it a pearl effect in the sun. I like it. Pretty nice indeed!

Hi guys and thanks for the swift replies as ever!!

Re Craig's post, yes I do still have full display/functions including the radio so I would guess by the comments made it's not this fuse? I shall investigate this weekend re the other suggestions and see if I can track down the issue and let everyone know.

Cheers

Hi guys and thanks once again for the replies

I have to confess – due to my idiotic abilities with such things – I personally didn’t fit them. I glossed over that bit in the intro to keep things simple and a friend did it for me and I’ve literally just spoken to him and he said they were wired up, screwed in and working fine when he put the door cards back.

That would infer to me that there has been some sort of issue with compressed/shorted wire upon replacing said door cards?? The ticking clock of family commitments will prevent me from doing anything about it this weekend I’d say so I’ll have to try and get it sorted over the week/next weekend and give you all an update!

Cheers
