Stunning Andy....One of Aflas best designs.

Good ones are strong money these days but there are a lot of cheaper OK ones that have big bills hiding - a real buyer beware car.

I keep looking at both 2.0 and V6 GTVs but I always come back to the reason I sold mine in the first place, there is hardly any time where I would take a GTV when I have an SZ sat in the garage, more is true these days with the 116 Giulietta sat next to the SZ. Hence the search for something different, and the same two keep coming into the frame Fulvia or Junior Z, the JZ will blow all my car fund where as the Fulvia, unless I go HF, will leave enough for an everyday sports car like a Cayman S.

A lot depends on the next few months, if we decide to move to Ireland permanently everything changes.

Small confession. I actually quite like the spoiler as it follows the line of the 'slash' along the flank of the car and the outer edge pronounces the lower hump in the trunk. It's also reasonably subtle as spoilers go. And this coming from someone who normally can't stand them!

Agree, the GTV has aged better over time than other cars or its era but in everything but pure point and shoot cornering the 3.2 GT has it beaten IMO

The 156/147 chassis of the GT is better than the GTV Tipo platform purely due to the fact is has upper and lower wishbones on the front axle...the GTV only has lowers. Still, the twinny being lighter up front went round roundabouts like it was on rails. The V6 was not so as its very nose heavy but that sound.....hubba-hubba :)

Another reason to choose the Fiat Coupe 20 V Turbo :) It also looks much nicer than the GTV, it goes much faster and it sounds better than the V6. Its also lighter and corners better, what's not to like? :) The only logical reason why they didn't outsell the GTV is badge snobbery.

An off beat 5 pot turbo sounds better than a normally aspirated V6 Busso? After that whopper there is no need to rebuke the other comments ;)

in my view yes it does, sounds like a baby V10 Lamborghini engine, but what do I know? I have very bad taste in cars, I like the most hated eras of Maserati and Alfa Romeo

Dicky, I do really like the look of the Fiat 20V Coupe and was seriously thinking about one. There are pluses and minuses for both. This is where I landed in my estimation:

Alfa GTV V6 3.0

- Amazing Pininfarina design, quite aggressive (I like this)
- Great sounding legendary 'Busso' V6 very torquey, which suits my driving style
- Great looking engine bay
- Love the 'lusso' interior, especially colour combos like car in red and beige/biscuit leather interior
- Must be wary of rust! Dinitrol every square inch ASAP

Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo Plus

- Lovely Chris Bangle design, less aggressive than the GTV, prettier, has aged very well
- Again a lovely sounding engine, flat 5 turbo also very tuneable, doubt it's as torquey as the Busso (I could be wrong)
- Very cluttered/packed looking engine bay, good to see the engine but it's not pretty
- Interiors not as nice as the Alfa and seem to age quickly from cars I've seen
- Again, be wary of rust, Dinitrol to the rescue

These were my top-line thoughts when comparing the two.

GTV and rust...what’s this you talk of?

I can hand on heart say they do not rust other than round the rear floor pan drain holes. Any body rust will be due to accidental paint removal and being laid bare to the elements.

Drove a F20V the week after I drove my first Alfa 3L GTV. The GF liked it which I think speaks volumes. I hated it and have never looked back.

That's good to know, thanks Matt. I've also heard you need to check behind the wheel arch liners and at various points on the floor pan. They were galvanised at the factory but even this is knocking on in years now. I'm paranoid about rot. Had the Ghibli injected in every cavity with Dinitrol wax, and would do the same with a GTV if I decide to go ahead and purchase.

Do you know that's the first time I've realised see that I never had any problem with rust. That really bucked the trend with Alfas. See a GTV makes even more sense now.

Good friend had a lease F20V back in '01, yellow, went like stink and he would go through a set of front tyres in 3K miles, but the lease was all inclusive including tyres!!
Even back then the electrics went crazy I recall, before it went back at only 2 years old, fuses blowing, turn on the lights and the rear wash wipe would operate etc.

The Fiat is mad as a bag of frogs, super quick especially when modified - I actually prefer the 16V Turbo over the 20V I really can't get on with that off beat 5 pot sound and there is little between them in out right power.

I think the design has aged badly, in the day I thought they looked fresh, like most of Bangles designs high on shock value but these days I just don't think it works. I particularly dislike the interior which once again I loved in the day. Every one I see these days has been thrashed and they show it, flex in the body was always an issue and age, poor build quality and abuse only makes things worse.

The GTV is the opposite, in the day I thought it stylish but hardly out there but now the subtle design has aged well, it still looks fresh. Not convinced about the Cup styling and I from some angles the last big nose versions look a bit out of balance.. The interior has always been good and so it remains today, especially with leather, everything is simple and where it should be, you sit low and feel part of the car.

I think the GTV handles better, much tauter and even with the V6 less prone to understeer when pushing hard although I do think the rear is fidgety on the limit, I have never had one let go but always think it is going to.

It's horses for courses, where would we be if we all like the same things, but my choice would always be Alfa over Fiat.

^I agree with most of that. The rear steering was a feature when the GTV was new, although powerflexing tends to negate it, so bear that in mind anyone going that route. As for letting go, I spun my first 3.0 GTV on a roundabout! Must have been some diesel spilled ;)
