On reflection during the ferry crossing, we decided that the Grande Est route from Mulhouse to Metz were some of the best roads we have ever driven. Right up there with the many roads we have driven in the Picos, Pyrenees and Alps.

Having already done that we would agree - although heading south through the Jura was okay too

Chased Blondie, who was takin' it easy and just enjoying the Grande Est scenery, my brakes were practically on fire at the top, and disconcertingly spongey on the way down.

Looks a great trip, Trier is nice, I stayed there many many years ago when we drove down there in my old Alfa Romeo 156 V6 to watch the German WRC.

I’ve heard of Black Forest but not Grande Est. What sort of cake is it?

Minced Alsatian on the bottom, then a layer of Champagne-soaked Ardennes pâté and finally a quiche Lorraine on top.
