My diff went on mine last year, come to think of it, it made that type of noise twice.....as there was a chunk of metal floating around, till it jammed up the diff!!

The RAC, a second hand box, new clutch and slave cylinder later, all sorted thanks to me brilliant Alfa specialist in five days, including having to find a box ;)

How much?

May be wrong but I think the 1.9 jtd is a saab unit not fiat so might be not so bad (money wise)
Yours is a diesel?

Nick, THAT'S what's happened to my 156V6. Alex G fitted a Saab 93 diff. Then we found a smashed thrust bearing, then a cracked shaft collet. Emphasis now upon Alfa's recommended oil change frequency

WTI, you go this sorted yet??

Half the delay's been due to locating the car at a workshop 1hour away, with a queue for access to a ramp.
Mechanic is mobile only and is run off his feet. As I write, the new collet is being engineered. Hopefully, it's the last piece in a jigsaw
which when originally complete/tight/lubricated seems to have hidden the u/s components

Sounds nasty, does the gearbox have its own oil the? Suppose it must do as otherwise the debris would go into the engine.

I have never changed mine but think it will now.

Just waiting for gearbox place to tell me how ******* mine is after just 40 thousand miles. The gaffer there says he's seen that M32 gearbox go as early as 12 thousand miles
