August 1999, I was on my way down the A5 heading for the big 'Mini 40' celebration at Silverstone in my '69 Mk2 Cooper when this ex-Paddy Hopkirk Abingdon Works Mk1 Cooper S pulled out of a side road in front of me, I duly followed him all the way there....

That must be the daft car line up, what’s going on with the hood on the Westfield next to it?

That’s known as the “half hood”. Quite useful when you want some air on a hot day, but don’t want to get sun burnt on a long journey. They are a popular option, and I have one for mine, as well as the normal full hood.
They do look a bit odd though if you fit the doors as well. So best used without doors.

60 years ago - Steve McQueen found himself over in the south of England in 1961 filming his latest movie and wasted no time immersing himself in the local racing scene including some tuition from John Cooper, he even took a Cooper racing car back home with him at the end of filming in early 1962. McQueen also became good friends with John Whitmore, 1961 British Saloon Car Champion and raced his Mini at Brands Hatch! The Mini Cooper demonstrator in the background in this shot (231 VPK) eventually became Cooper’s 1964 Sebring race entry.
