Just a gimmick. Been around for a while, that article is 2018. There’s a very good reason why you don’t see it on anything else.

I imagine any aerodynamic gain is countered by complexity, weight and opportunity to breakdown.

Not seen it on any race car. The aero gain on the left rear for example will be balanced by a loss on the front right. It’s just going to understeer into the nearest barrier.
