Replacing Rubber Petrol Cap Holder

I posted piks of my fuel cap over on ML a year or so ago, but here it is again.

As you can see, the alloy ones have female fine threads and are vented to the atmosphere. They are totally different from the plastic click type.
The filler necks are different, as are the mounting holes. As a manufacturing engineer, I am puzzled as to why this fuel system was used on 6mt Spyders only and pre-facelift.
As I noted on ML, I was at a car show, and next to me was a 328 GTS, and we got to comparing cars, noted that the fuel caps were interchangeable. If anyone knows the answer to this mystery please let me know.

@FIFTY , any chance of you getting these made? Otherwise I may but a new Fiat cap for ~£20 and simply swap over the strap.

Sorry, just realised that @Vampyrebat was considering a fabricator to make these.

Looking at the design (hole one end with two locating holes at the other), would this VW tether work:

Just as a follow up, I bought a VW tether and it was ultimately a bust.

The 2 pin arrangement is the same size, though I did need to sand this part thinner to fit in the loop. The internal diameter of the hole at the other end is 6mm rather than the 5mm of the Maserati tether but that would probably not be a deal breaker.

The problem though is the VW tether is too short... the search goes on.

Would this work? With these informative measurements.

They are informative @MarkMas but 7.5mm would be too loose I fear. The 6mm fit of the VW tether is a little loose as it is, but does make fitting easy.

I misled you all. The VW tether does just about stretch but the flap does not open fully with it attached. That does not stop you opening the cap and placing on the hook on the lid though.

So we do have a solution, and having approached a supplier we may have a better solution still in the future.

Any suggestions for cleaning the filth from around cap? Autoglym Polar Wash has made very little impression.

Here is the link to the tether I bought which comes complete with 2 new pins should you manage to lose the originals:

I only post the link as some VAG tethers on ebay have a curved end rather than straight all the way through, and so that may further affect the fit (stretch) in a detrimental way.

So I have been in contact with one of the ebay sellers and he has managed to source a longer tether with the curved end. Tight fit into the ring but overall a much better tether.

A link to that on ebay would be helpful, well don’t for persevering

I noticed that the same was about to happen on the strap of the petrol cap on the Punto. Loads of rubber left from my first endeavor, getting good at this now, took less than an hour!
