That's the issue even for me as a French resident I can buy in other EU countries but when o bought in Belgium last year took me a week and then 2 days there.
You can't buy a car like you can in the UK.

When the Architect finally builds his FR property what would be the issues with keeping and perhaps registering our ‘75 LHD Citroen DS as FR again over there for occasional use?

Only legally possible if he takes French Residency.
I've met a few who think they are clever bucking the system but since Brexit the game is up.
Cars have been crushed and people even charged with Smuggling.

The transporters are likely to need a "full load" before they will attempt to repatriate a vehicle.
It could be riding around on the back of a lorry for some time until the carrier has a load. Its quite a vexing thought if you are at all precious about your stricken car, or it's contents..!
Fixing is always the best approach IMO.
Hope it works out for yous.....

Hence sell the DS to a French resident ;) and borrow the car from him :)

As I understand it, as it stands currently; if you are repatriating and taking resident status, you can take any and all of your possessions, should you so wish.There a couple caveats that apply.
You must be moving with "resident" status..
You have to have owned the "stuff" for at lest 12 months (prove it)
You have to undertake not to sell it for at least 12 months.....

Otherwise, it's a case of list it, value it, submit your papers to French customs, and ship it !
