Schools

Here is a new topic I think
A distant relative is considering sending her challenged daughter to a private school at a cost of £65000pa
The school seems ok, its the cost that alarms me. The poor girl will not be going on to University or anything like that. I realise as parents we all want to do our best for offspring but this seems excessive
Am I out of touch?

That seems a lot. Unless of course it offers some extra special needs elements. As published in the Times recently, the most expensive of the boarding schools is Tonbridge at a tad under £15k per term. All the main others (Eton, Marlborough, etc) are around this. So, for boarding, £40-£45k per year is the typical figure.

Thanks guys for the input
In my day the girl would have been termed 'Slow' so the only special needs are mental to accommodate her weaknesses.
I too thought it was a high figure, it is not a boarding school and is known as Teesside High. I will check out their website myself
Thanks again

Teesside High may be independent day-school now, but the building is definitely co-ed state school of the 1970s.

Who sold that off, and who got the kick backs along the way?

Been there since 1938. If you were going to build a school in the 1970s you’d have gone to the same architect, whether the state was paying or it was private.

WTF is wrong with you people? , If you are clever enough to do well, why would you need this? , make your own way and don't say because it's my offspring coz that's what the Masons say........

What do you mean 'you people'?

So far in this thread the only people proposing sending children to private school are @daverichardson 's distant relatives. And the child in question is apparently, NOT 'clever enough to do well'. Others on the forum have mentioned various prices, and @bigbob vaguely mentioned that some people went to another school. That's it.

It feels like you are 'having a go' at some imaginary toffs, in this thread at least.

Or were you just helping @CatmanV2 's comment to come true, as it hadn't kicked off yet?

I think this could go south very fast

It turns out the £65000 is for 5 years not 1!
Apologies to all
Phew!

Honestly, without knowing the school it's impossible to say. I have a friend who went to Gordounstoun and hated it. Worst time of his life. The 'quality' of a school will always be a function of the pupils there at any one time, the teachers and the level of pastoral care. Now, if you want your offspring to hobnob with the children of oligarchs, bankers and well-healed online party-supplies companies and aspire to them to have access to impressive facilities then maybe in some ways the choice is easier. I don't envy your friend this choice but would encourage them to think first of the care and support the child will receive rather than assuming if you pay then everything will be fabulous.

Ho old is she? We are planning to send our daughter to a private boarding school near Farnham for her A levels (Brockwood House). Very alternative learning method and matches how she was learning in Germany (before we moved her back three years ago and she hasn't forgiven us since!!). Brockwood is ca. £25k per year but only accept children from the age of 14.
