I have been with Direct Line for 3 years but not really tested the market and with my Jag XJ and GTS coming up for renewal it was time to take a look.

DL were quoting £1850 for the two cars, with the XJ limited to 25k miles and the GTS 5k. Cars are on the drive and I have a “little history” in terms of points and accidents (albeit non fault).

Did the compare sites, Admiral, LV and etc and got the price down by a few hundred ££’s then phone A Plan. Their Thatcham office were really helpful and 12 hours later came back with a little over £1200 (GTS £460) and that includes full euro breakdown (just in case of a misshap on the LeMans trip.

I am well chuffed !! and hope to add my Mustang Fiat 500 and wife’s car in due course.

Good stuff Scaf: single biggest tip I know is to sort insurance 30 days ahead of renewal for the best prices as you get closer to end date they all go up!

Many of us have multiple cars and therefore buy Motor Legal Protection for each policy, which I think is a bit of a con. A quick search reveals this company , who wll sell you one policy for you and yours for £20 based on two people. It's certainly a saving on Admiral (3x£26.74= £80.22) of £60! Same £100,000 protection.

What is the forum's collective thoughts on this? Am I being too simplistic?

Sounds too good to be true, but what a great idea, should also be able to scrub off courtesy car from policy as well, as hire car is included, but weather that would make a difference to premiums, who knows.

Researching further, there's loads of other providers, so pick and choose. All around the £20-30 mark. All provide £100K of legal fees for motoring related incidents.
Without sounding clichéd, the insurance companies are ripping you off (Rip off Britain) by your ignorance.
Remember, motor insurance is a legal requirement, whereby you gamble with an insurance company that you WILL have an accident. The insurance company is the bookie who pays out if you 'win'!.

legal protection is a waste of time and money imo, technically and it's in the small print they have the option to refuse taking any case on board should they believe there is a slim chance of success and if you do have a claim there are plenty of "no win no fee" solictors around anyway

Good news but one point about European breakdown cover is does it cover repatriation? Most included policies don't and it can cost a small fortune to get a stranded car back from France

Just got an email from insurance saying that if there's no Deal Brexit then we'll have to have green cards for European travel...

Ditto. And presumably one of those international driving permit wotsits. I'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

That’s a good point, I will double check with them.

Tracker renewal came through this week, £230 or so. Yikes! So I phoned Admiral and asked how much my insurance would increase by if I didn't have a tracker subscription. The answer? £30.

Figures.....

C

They don't mind.

They don't mind.

Have you asked one? ;)

If I put CCTV up to overlook the car (and tell the insco), my premium actually goes up...

I just managed a great quote on my QP Sport GT - Class 1 business with 12,000 miles, me and the wife, protected no claims, etc... £370! - car parked on the drive, but apparently garage/street/drive had no weighting. This was with Privilege.
