Hi everybody,

Recently got a trickle charger for the Quattroporte and not sure which bolts I should attached the positive and negative leads to (Bosch S4 013)?

Can anybody help me out, I'm sure it is the ones circled but can't be sure.

I am fooling around with my battery too.
I know one of the posts works but not sure which one
I will experiment while messing about, however, to charge my battery (QPV) I leave it in situ and attach the +ive crocodile clip to the clamp that sits around the +ive battery terminal and the -ive crocodile clip to the
t piece that sits on the -ive battery terminal.
Its a bit of a faff to get at the +ive one as it is in the recess where the battery sits but it is do able.
I have not had any problems until 2 days ago! - see Battery thread

Anywhere on the - & + terminals will do. The large connectors fitted to the car just a lot of secure and tidy options for various power feeds.

I have both C-Teck comfort and battery sense hardwired in the boot now. Wouldn’t be without either. For comparison I have a healthy Bosch S5 013 fitted. If the car just sits in used I get about 2 - 3 weeks from 100% before I get an amber warning to charge. Normally somewhere around the 40-45% mark.

My own has been lazy as the morning frosts have set in. Hooked it up to a trickle charged today and it first registered 11.2v and charged it up to 14.2v but still started very lazy!

Is there any way around this? I have been driving the car but fear it's only a matter of time before it goes dead!

Chris, get yourself a new battery. This is exactly what happened to mine a couple of years ago. A new battery c £285 plus a CTEC trickle charger to keep it fully charged sorted the problem. Perfect starter now even in cold weather.

The charger I have is very similar to the CTEK. What voltage can these batteries take before 'overcharging'?

Pretty certain any half decent charger/maintainer wouldn’t allow this to happen.

Most good quality trickle charges regulate how much charge reaches the battery, so they should never overcharge. Having a trickle charger running when not using the QP, continuously conditions the battery and keeps it at max charge. It also helps to reduce battery deterioration which often comes with age, so in theory the battery should last a lot longer. Start doing this even with a brand new battery to help prolong its life. By following these tips (provided to me by Bowker Maserati - when they were a Maserati dealer) then hopefully you should never get a sluggish cold start again.

It isn’t a good idea to trickle charge lead acid batteries continuously. A standard trickle charger will provide a constant voltage and will indicate when the battery is charged because the current drawn reduces, but as the voltage stays high it can cause high temps and water evaporation and corrosion of the positive terminal. Think of it like filling a bucket from a tap, if you keep the tap on the bucket overflows and the water that overflows might cause damage.

Most “intelligent” chargers / conditioners will allow the cell voltage to reduce to the “float” level effectively creating a very shallow discharge / charge cycle which prevents this damage from occurring. They only come on the replace water that has evaporated from the bucket, so it never overflows.

The important thing here is to know your charger, if it is a basic trickle charger then don’t keep it on all the time, use it for a few hours every week. I have an intelligent charger but only use it every few weeks anyway.

There are risks either way, but discharging a battery below the minimum final voltage will also cause permanent damage, so you have to try and keep things somewhere in the middle.

Hi Chris.
the voltage could be showing perfectly fine.
It’s all about the amps.
I would replace your battery and also check the earth strap going to your gearbox.
I’ve had tons which rot out
