Cost of new brake pads, discs and shoes?

Hi guys

I am wondering if anyone has any prices they have been quoted or paid for new discs and pads all round and rear handbrake shoes, all fitted for a 4200GT?

I know there is a big debate over using OEM discs or otherwise and I am not wanting to have that again but I am interested in what the costs are, specifically for OEM kit but also for other options if people have gone down that route.

Cheers

PS What is the highest mileage anyone has achieved on factory discs?

Hi Bigbob,

I've managed to eek 67K out of mine, but though they have some meat left, they're now loosing their balance and are 'corrugated', so more than ready to be changed.

So after some time on Eurospares, this seems to be the shopping list..

Front discs - £213.56 per corner including VAT, so £427.12
Rear discs - £219.65 per corner including VAT, so £493.30
Rear Shoes - £69.24 per corner including VAT, so £138.48
OEM Front pads - £245.82!! Can this be right?
OEM Rear Pads - £233.32!! Can this be right?

So total shopping list with OEM pads and shoes.. £1,538.05

Alternatively go to Belfast Brakes for the pads - £70.00 for all four corners.
Alternatively you can go Belfast brakes to re-line your shoes - £30.00.

Haven't found a cheaper alternative to the OEM discs, but would welcome comments?

So if you go with Belfast Brakes, the shopping list is reduced to £1,020.42.

And the fitting?....... I'm guessing, but an hour per corner at the front and an hour and a half per corner at the back seems ample, so five hours labour at between £50 and £100 per hour, or alternatively it seems like a do-able DIY job.

Hope this helps? Cheers, Miles.

I would guess that anyone with a garage or flat dry space could replace this lot on there own for free.
I would guess that 30 mins per corner was more realistic for the front and maybe 40 for the rears if doing the shoes for Handbrake as well.
who manufactures the OEM pads though?

Can't disagree on your first comment Adam, but must on your second. When was the last time you saw a grease monkey with a sweat on when he (or she) was on the clock?

Have you asked MP for a quote? I only ask as when last chewing the fat with them I mentioned the oem prices and their reply seemed to indicate they could do it for a lot less.

Cheers

Hi nfm,

I'd be interested to know if this included alternatives to the OEM discs. Did they give you any clues when you spoke to them?

Cheers, Miles.

FD or performance italia will be able to help on the disc front, but they are regarded as upgraded items, so no cheaper really than the OEM ones.

I looked at the FD big brake kit Matt, and yes I can imagine that the performance is dramatically improved, but at £1,850 for a pair (admittedly with other bits and pieces) it's a big premium over OEM. Now if it were for all four, then that would be interesting!

Have done mate but thanks for the prompt. They can get the OEM discs cheaper than eurospares and use non OEM pads which are way cheaper. Think mine are ok for another year at least but it will be a big bill when it comes. Put that with a service and possibly a clutch (still on factory clutch at 40k - manual 4200 mind) and it could cost 25%+ of what my car is worth at the time!

I was looking at rs246.com and someone was advertising new OEM discs for a B7 RS4 (the recent one) for £499 a pair including VAT. Perhaps that is the going rate for fast cars...

BB...see the post above...what discs/pads do they use.....feedback form other users...............and as per your quote.....getting the brakes done plus a clutch equates to 1/4 the overall value of the car.....makes you think and consider options very seriously for all those guys with the now sub 15K value 4200s......

Perhaps when we get the details and feedback we can put them on the alternative parts section....if everyone feels its appropriate....thoughts forum?

They use OEM discs but, I presume, get a trade discount.

They replaced pads on mine last year which were Delphi IIRC.

I've sent an email to Scuderia Systems to see whether the Brembo disks stack up as an alternative. I'll post the details on receipt.

And how have you found them....in use/wear?

Delphi IIRC can be sourced where...prices....reference number for?

Currently finalising the pricing on the Brake Discs from Formula Dynamics..

The pricing will be around the same price as the OEM ones, the FD product is a upgraded item, full details will be provided over the next couple of days.

We also have the FD upgraded pads instock, made from a Carbon/Kevlar compound, they bite better and resist heat better aswell. Price for a full set (Front and Back) on these are similar to just a front set of OEM ones. A further discount on these Brake Pads for SM members will be announced in the next couple of days aswell.

Pads are also available from EBC, Apec etc, but the feedback that ive had, hasnt been great, hence why I have resisted in stocking these.

I'll be interested to see the details Noor, particularly if they're the same as, or better than the OEM parts.
