Dashcam?

I have one that is currently in Tesco fuel stations, it's £20 plus the Sd card. It captures in 1080p and various lower grades. It doesn't record speed or have an accident sensor but rather loops the cards memory. It's adequate, small enough and cheap enough and actually records pretty good images. You can have the mic on or off. Perfect for what I wanted.

It has a shock meter which I assume it records when the car is locked up but saves a minute either side of any impact it detects.

I have one hard wired into my daily driver. It's a Nextbase and is good, you can buy wiring harnesses from eBay cheaply so you can wire it to be on only when engine running etc or permanently on for theft damage etc.
The only issue with them is, mine included, it doesn't record well at night, some of the more expensive units have a night vision assist. The other issue is playback, the supplied leads only connect to computer and then the view is small, the patch leads to hook to TV on mine are very expensive and not as yet available 3rd party.
Don't judge but my missus is a Police traffic officer and they are finding them more and more helpful for the innocent party, mind you she thinks we are all guilty.

Given problems with trackers draining batteries in our cars what is the drain with one of these permanently running?

On mine 150mA, but I no longer have running all time as have enough cctv cameras at home and it's wired into Porsche the battery of which never discharges even after weeks of non use, watch now it'll start playing up.
There is always option of wiring to a solar panel or auxiliary battery.

I have a next base one, it was £180, it's worth getting a good one, after all it could save you thousands

I have the Thinkware F750 and opted for from and rear.
Hard wired and motion sensor so it activates if people approach the car (front and rear) and then has the usual impact activation etc (which also works when car is parked and captures 10 second BEFORE and activation (clever).

It also has UK speed cameras and gives audio warnings as well as a coupe of other road safety features which can be deactivated.

you can adjust the battery protect level so you don't have to worry about it running you battery flat - it is a great bit of kit but was £200.
I have much cheaper cams in the other family cars.

That seems a good price Matt.... Could be tempted after seeing some one break in front of one of my lorries for no reason....If it didn't have the dash cam we would not have been able to challenge and send footage to the police...

I seriously thought of when when considering a new Garmin, only problem is having seen so many people incriminated for speeding that I wouldn't want one that records speed.

You don't need one that records speed to be incriminated! People have been done before based on time taken to travel distance between landmarks etc....

Mostly when they've been stupid enough to post it on YouTube , I doubt police have detectives any more , they just monitor YouTube and Facebook for morons

So Phil probably not a good idea then as in the case of an incident that's the first they will grab when trying to proportion the blame

I had a cam from argos call prestigio but it was **** , found the receipt yesterday so took it back

Swapped it for a nextbase 312gw, had a play today and I'm impressed , good picture , GPS and the best bit is WiFi and an app to transfer the footage without removing the card

It's also on a magnetic mount so you can pull the camera off and leave the mount and power cord behind
£90 in argos at the moment , no memory card included

Yep Darren, but as I mentioned and Phil concurred do we really want to advertise to the old bill what speed we may or may not have been doing?
