If life was like the Premier league then Fiat will be selling off Ferrari.

But then thinking about it, Ferrari is in rude health and it could stand on its own two feet as a car manufacturer/racing company/merchandising company etc. Hasn't Maserati been 'shifted' to the control of Alfa Romeo (whatever that means). Luca di Montezemolo has higher aspirations on being in politics.

Tell me I'm wrong.

They don't need to sell Ferrari and I doubt they ever will. Ferrari would be thrown to the European legislative wolves without the protection of small car producing Fiat, so instead every year or two they let the rumours leak about an IPO and then Fiat's institutional investors are given first refusal and hay presto, new liquidity. They won't be able to keep doing it for ever, but with the BRIC's steaming ahead, they'll be doing it for the foreseeable future. Good for them I say. It's a great brand with plenty of scope to grow it's sales, so why use your own money when you can use someone else's, whilst at the same time keeping complete control.

Might just need the money in the current EU climate, who knows, but great rumour.

IMHO Alfa would go to VW first, but the Italians (unlike the British) hate to sell off their national treasures, just look at last time Ford tried to buy Ferrari, the Italians never had any intention of selling out, they just lead them down the garden path, at least the GT40 came out of that for Ford, iconic!
