A guy I used to work with is really into hifi , 10k amps , 15k speakers , anyway he says he's got a pre amp he's looking to sell , I can try it out he says

It's a 'music first audio' passive magnetic pre amp

Never heard of them , there's no power supply so how can it be any good , it's heavy though , that's good with hifi

I connect it up to the Quad 909 power amp and the sound is simply astounding even using an old Toshiba HD-DVD player as the cd source (cd player packed up)

Looks like that's stopping then , but I think he knew that when he offered it to me.

I do hope you're not playing that DVD player on top of your deck, when listening to the deck? ;)

No , it's just there to test the pre amp out , I had a Basil Fawlty moment with the Marantz CD94 after it rejected a cd one too many times so it's gone , they don't make the original belts anymore and the ones you can get don't last long so I haven't got a CD player at the moment

Might just buy a new one , though this sounds quite good for a 15 year old HD dvd player

All change
Back to the Naim Unitiqute though annoyingly it's developed a fault while being in the box , the display uses Oled technology and the display has faded to almost unviewable £150 to fix or £350 for a full service and fix

But , dropped on this morning at the boot sale , guy had done a house clearance , in it was a box of cables so I bought them , in them was a 5m pair of sonic link biwire speaker cables and 2 audio interconnects made from the same cable

I've since found out sonic link changed their name to black rhodium in 2002

Not being a total spanner I'd never heard of black rhodium but they appear to have been a bit of a find

So never being a beliver that cables make a difference I plugged them in and the difference is astonishing

Unless I spend £££ I really can't see me improving on this

I need some more speaker cables.

My current interconnects were made by an old work colleague. Witchcraft, I tell you!

I was using some cable I'd bought from eBay , quite thick but unbranded , probably from China , then I bought some QED silver special 25th anniversary which was a jump up but these are considerably better , they are bi-wire cables though, two out of the amp splitting to four at the speakers so that might be part of it
I suspect it's like performance cars though , you get used to it and crave more.

You need to bi-amp for bi-wiring otherwise what's the point?
Eb

That's what I thought but having gone back to the QED this morning there's definitely a difference , might just be the cables rather than being connected to all 4 terminals on the speakers though

I'll be buying £1500 mains leads next :D

One thing that's been a constant is the spendor speakers , unless I upgrade to spendor A7 I can't see me ever changing them

We lost Robbie Shakespeare yesterday of Sly and Robbie fame, this is a great reference recording for testing, fantastic.

That's a great track as well! Much better than the audophile madrigals or organ CDs that I bought back in the day. While the recordings were superb, the music was lousy! Just 'cos I could hear the No. 43 rumbling behind me at 4.43 on track 6 doesn't make it good music!

Having a few friends round tonight because its nearly Christmas. Playing Handel's Messiah. Not an orchestra, you understand, just HiFi. Still a concert though and I have the good fortune to have a decent recording.

Picked this lot up a few weeks ago Roksan Caspian
94615

Typically none of it worked so I dropped it off at Wilkinson's HiFi in Nelson

You should have a look at their website , man they've got some nice gear in their shop ,really nice guys too , happy to chat , I felt like I'd droped an amstrad off though

The CD and integrated just need a service but the 2 power amps need a re cap , I'm really looking forward to giving this a go with the spendors

Be interested how you find it. Never been a huge fan of them.
