Mornin' all!

There's a nip in the air today (as the Yanks observed one day in the 1940's in Hawaii) but it's onward & upward today.

Many many fine tasks to be done like the alternator - desoldering the phase wires from the rectifier.
Memories from the past - and even today the solder won't melt normally, is it a tempering process over years of use I wonder? I'm pretty sure they used 'hard' solder at the factory but although the surface melts even a mega iron will not free the wire. Scientific butchery required here as Scotchlocks won't do it! Please avert your eyes if you are of a sensitive nature!

Can anyone tell me if the 'Fox' and 'Easter Compton' Alfa meets are still taking place? Nick said it would be up to the new AROC organiser but I have been unable to find out (probably because I don't do Farcebook!)
I guess we could just carry on if not, if anyone's up for it?

Have a fun packed day everyone! :)
Has nick resigned FROM AROC then

Sadly from what I gathered at the Poplars Farm meeting on 5th December he is no longer organising for the AROC Bristol area and thought that the Somerset organisers might take over.
There were about 10 cars there so someone else should be able to confirm this.
Like I posted earlier I don't know if the gatherings are taking place and was hoping for some feedback!

Thanks for the info. Tess.
Not that urgent that I needed to know at 4.30 am! :)
I guess you were at work.

I've looked at all the AROC area sites and can't find anything so presume the info is published somewhere on Farcebook.

Now here's a reason to be cautious about Chinese sourced products.

I decided to replace the 40 odd year old fuses on my other car (British made with ceramic bodies) with some sparkly new ones for 'peace of mind'.
This is what happened to the 25 amp one after idling the engine for a few minutes - fortunately with the bonnet up so a fire did not start in the plastic fusebox in the glass fibre car!!
Good job I wasn't driving it on the road at the time. Obviously I will inform them that it is the metal bit that should melt and not the plastic meantime I have put the old one back for it's first road run later today.

Pictures below about 3x full size.

Morning everyone :)

Yes, That was a near one 'cos those cars are very prone to become torches, usually though from spitting back through the Dellorto's and causing an airbox fire.

There's a Lotus in our local garage which flamed up from a spit-back when they were moving it onto the ramp with a cold engine and after they sorted it out it needed a new loom, bonnet, airbox, carbs (which melted) and all the other expensive trivia associated with an underbonnet fire. It has been there now for over 5 years and was my first line of enquiry before I bought elsewhere!

I'm looking to change the intake to the Alfa system when I can find an unobtrusive place for a remote air filter and also fit an anti-flashback gauze in the airbox.

Obviously the inscrutable Chinese have found a more devious way than the above, rather like us using aniseed balls as fuses for limpet mines in the second world war!
The other lesson I learned is that it is wise to keep your 'other cars' insured even when they are SORN'ed. That incident could have been VERY expensive.

Oh, and regarding my comments on Chinese exports you can add to the list insulating tape that won't stick when it's cold (even sticky to sticky) and kettles that drip boiling water onto your feet when you stagger in for a coffee break - just off the top of my head, there are certainly others as well.

For goodness sake let's make our own stuff in the UK again and export quality products to the world, like we used to! GGGGggggggggrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

You don't know how true that is at the moment, and no I am not, haven't been for months...................

Hi Nik,
Welcome back - we were all speculating on the reasons for your absence: either
1). a woman...........
or
2). you'd 'gone over to the other side' (and given up on Alfas & bought a Ford...........)

Bl00dy h3ll, he lives!

I take it you have got to the bit in your new relationship where you've examined all the lady bits that have jaded you for the past month and thoughts are now returning to cars?
