Drove home from holiday yesterday. St Ives (Cornwall) to Frome. 180 miles over A30 -Bodmin Moor, edge of Dartmoor - M5 to Bridgewater then A361 over the Mendips past Glastonbury. Took 5 hours s/be 3 1/2 so not too bad.

M5 was single lane for 30-40 miles. We witnessed some poor so&so jacknife an articulated lorry into the central reservation on the A30, very slowly so not hurt (no injuries other than a laundry bill! But the cab was badly smashed up). We kept going all the way until about 6 miles from home - a milk lorry jacknifed on a hill but just as we arrived the police and a tractor (farmer) turned up & cleared the road in five minutes! As I like to say 'the sun shines on the righteous' ( you might say 'the devil looks after his own'..............)

Keep warm and stay safe, folks.

Good morning

Took the Q4 out in the snow as I needed to get the Mother in law out of my house after 2 days of her ramblings and being forced to watch her TV choice as the guest

The Q4 is absolutely fantastic in the snow and ice and has not problem with traction whatsoever.

Morning Nik

Annoying!

You need these things happen at the right time for the engine to start:
Fuel/Mixture
Compression
Spark
Exhaust
Timing
Vacuum (no leaks)

Work through them one by one and you will soon find your fault, good luck!

not me doing the job, the car is in Clevedon ;) No spark we know that, just don't know why. Replaced everything that I can for brand new, plugs, lead dizzy coil etc etc ;)

May sound silly but I had a 33 16v with a starting issue that we traced to a bad earth between the starter motor and the engine itself - removed the starter cleaned the faces between the engine and stater and then it fired. Obviously the starter wasn’t spinning so may not be the same fault with yours

Hi Nick,

Another 'basic' check - presumably the distributor rotor is turning?

Trying to think back to my boxer days, usually reliable engines, with the HT on the dist. cap or a cracked rotor or the LT points & condenser the usual suspects if I remember correctly. (I had 5 Suds)

Matt's got it right though, thorough but tedious checks back on the HT from plug leads to coil output lead then checking onto the 12V circuit as far back as the ignition switch in the worst case. :(

Hope it all goes well Nick but I notice you have fitted an electric fuel pump - I've just had a failure on the newish Chinese pump a PO fitted on the Lotus so it is off the road. IMHO mechanical pumps are best! Good thing is electric ones are as cheap as chips so I'll carry a spare in the boot!

Hi Nik
Another check is the low tension side of the coil.
I once had an engine that would start & run just fine and then just cut out for no apparent reason. But it would start again at the next turn of the switch. What had happened was LT wire to the tab (electrical connector) had partially broken at the point of entry. Not a clean break only a partial one. The wire/connection that remained allowed sufficient current through to start and run the engine but occasionally (presumably due to the engine vibrating) the current would short, cutting the engine - but with the engine now not moving a press of the starter would 'fix' temporarily the problem. It was only in the garage (no lighting at the time) that I literally saw the problem: I started the engine and ('cos it was dark) literally saw the spark as the engine cut. Simply replacing the tab solved the problem.

Good morning One & All. :)

Morning all, been a Giulietta weekend

Productive though I noticed on your other post, nice car. :)
Best of luck with the MOT retest, It's a good job you spotted the fuel leak though after the tester missed it.
Italian carburettors and fuel leaks do make life interesting!

As Muppet points out, you need to look at the wiring, earthing and even the ignition switch.

Trace the fault back with a multimeter from the Spark plugs, leads, distributor, coil, wiring (inc earths) back to the ignition switch, it should not be very difficult to find where the power signal stops.
