The Hard Life of my Alfasud Ti

Sounds like a lost puppy post, I know :yeah:

However, its true....

Ever since I saw Kevin's S3 Ti, I wanted one myself....

Was a long shot back then finding one, but out of luck I found one !!!

It had been abandoned in a field, outside an auto-electrician's shop, with all its paperwork done, waiting to be scrapped :battered:

Turns out, the car started off its life as a Silver Alfasud Ti, which was never really taken care of.
It changed many owners, someone even painted it in black, and did a very poor job at it, resulting to more issues at the end....

The SUD was finally bought by a guy who liked to .... :drinks: ..... a lot ....
I'm sure the car got air-borned quite a few times, and the chassis had the marks to prove it...

This last owner, went out one night, had a few barrels of drinks, then set off to go home , stopping for fuel on his way.
A few miles after refueling, the car stalled and he left it on the highway.
Next day, he figured that it was an electrical problem, so he towed it to this auto-electrician to fix it for him.

The professional electrician couldnt figure out what the problem was, so he changed the alternator, distributor, ignition and coil, and the car still wouldnt start.
He then gave the owner a bill for what he did, and told him to go and get it coz he couldnt fix it.

The owner never went, partly because he didnt know what to do with it, and because he didnt have any money to pay the electrician for the parts he changed....
So, he did all the necessary paperwork, and the car was sitting patiently in that field , waiting to be scrapped :(

I found it, looking like this :

I made all necessary procedures and paid the guy the amount he would get if he was to scrap it, and got all the papers of the car as well.

At first glance, it had a broken drivers window mech, an EXTREMELY rusted rear hatch, holes here and there, very bad paint job, and an engine and gearbox which I had no idea in what state they were in.

Went to pick it up during the night, and when everything was nice and quiet, I went about trying to start the engine, see if I could figure out the problem !

Didnt take long, and the problem was found ;)
Towed it at the nearest petrol station , filled the tank up with PETROL to mix with the DIESEL it had in, and the engine fired up eventually in a thick black smoke :frusty5:

I actually drove the car home, stopping at a 24h car wash station on my way

Front calipers were seized, so among the first jobs I did was a rebuild of the front calipers

The rear hatch was COMPLETELY SHOT and I didnt even want to go near the welder given what I had to work with....

Pictures of the cracked chassis points as well

I eventually found a decent rear hatch in UK and I shipped it over.
Also bought a good front bonnet - mine was totally rusted and covered up in filler and paint - so I had both of those panels painted and replaced.

The engine was now running smoothly, I welded and reinforced the cracks, and I had even taken my Sud on its first 2 day trip up the mDSC03370.jpgountains :)

Used the car for a couple of months, thinking of a good time frame to start a complete rebuild on it,

and then my decision got a lot easier ....

I got rear ended, smashed the rear tail gate, wheel well, rear hatch, spoiler and even the rear right panel :(
Even the exhaust was folded in half !
The impact was from a light truck (fully loaded with frozen meat) and the driver didnt even use the brakes !

His insurance gave me 400 euros Salvage - which meant that given their estimate, they gave me 400 Euros for the value of the car , and Salvage meant that it was either Total Loss or if I wanted to fix it, I could pay out of my own pocket to cover the repair over the 400...

So now, its been at a friends bodyshop for over a year now....

Meanwhile, I took the car apart and started scraping off the paint...

I bought a new set of rear wheel arch repair kits, and also found a nice donor sud (it was a 4 door S2 one, but the parts I needed were the same)

Got a new rear bumper, and a front new bumper from Germany, along with great condition front lights and other bits and pieces...

Also got my hands on a stored complete and un-cracked dashboard !!! (wish I could say un-crapped as well, coz the guy had it stored in a building with bird access).

So now, I'm waiting for my mate from the bodyshop to start working on the car.
He promised me he's gonna start soon, but I'm not in a hurry as I've got other ongoing projects at the time.

At least its nice and dry where its at right now, not to mention it has good company ;)2012-11-22 16.07.05.jpg2012-12-04 15.40.43.jpg2012-12-04 15.41.14.jpg2013-02-02 11.30.05.jpg
