That's the service book. Logbook is the V5.

It's law in France to carry it but just say it's not law in the UK to carry it if stopped.

If you get done at excessive speed they will impound your car, send you home then you will have to go to court months later where you will be fined and have the impound fees to pay too.

You will be looking at about £10k.

If they offer you the €1.5-2k spot fine pay it!

So if you say the car is not yours and you have not got the logbook they cannot impound the car just fine you and ban you from driving in France for X days. As they don't have access to DVLA they can't prove otherwise.

On other roads, including auto-routes, they are as follows.

When speeding 1kph over to 19kph over the fine €45 and 20kph to 39kph it’s a €90 penalty.

When 40kph to 49kph its €135 and in excess of 50kph over limit €750 and your car can be confiscated to the police compound!

Excessive speed on the motorway of 136mph/220kph upwards carries the heavy fine, impounding and court.

So let me get this right, the speed limit on most French motorways is about 80mph, you can go 45kmh or 27mph over that limit to 107mph for €135.

Seems fairly reasonable value for money. I think it should be referred to as the fast track fee.

Despite warning every year there are always some Le Mans goers that caught for speeding. Other things they fine for a flourescent safety jackets, its not good enough just to have them they must be in the car so that they can be fitted before you get out in the event of an accident issue etc, warning triangle and spare bulb set (although they don't seem to care that the bulbs match the car).

The French see this weekend as away of recouping some of the EU rebate from the Brits and some villages are know to hold street parties the following weekend on the proceeds.

It's a right of passage.

You haven't truly been to Le Mans unless you get caught speeding.

This.

During my first LM trip a friendly motorcycle cop introduced himself to me and told me that I'd been registered 3 times over some distance in this area:

'Excessive speed on the motorway of 136mph/220kph upwards carries the heavy fine, impounding and court'

I made the decision to conduct our conversation entirely in French (I have a limited grasp of the language) and was contrite. I feared a huge fine and loss of my car, so when his colleague told me (all in French again) that they were going to fine me €90 and I was then to **** off I couldn't reach for my wallet quickly enough! Lesson learned. I think.

^^^^ This. In spades.

Speaking some French, no matter how little will help. Being contrite will help. Being ready to pay the fine without argument immediately in cash is essential.

On another point, don't think not having the V5 with you means they can't impound the car. It's an offence on its own, and they can impound the car anyway regardless of who you might say is the owner, pending further investigations. MAF's approach is the only one which will help you - gone are the days of paying the 'high speed fee' and simply driving away - they will record your licence details, and enough of a record means you will be banned from driving in France, even on your UK licence. Get caught then, and it will be a trip to prison.

Racecar Engineering magazine has a nice free Le Mans download available at the moment, which might interest some of you. You will need to register a free account with them, but no purchases are necessary to get this PDF download. Has lots of good tech information and some stunning photos.

I can vouch for Dans drifting ;) and the fact that motorcycle police can come out of now where even on an empty motorway .

The problem I have with it is that they are crooks, they have the power to stop any one of us to fund their summer holiday cash reserves. Last year was a great example where one of us got stopped despite all 5 of us doing similar speeds and he was escorted off the motorway and lined up with 10 other Brit Victims who too had been targeted. They had no proof radar or not of speeds etc so it's just BS.

I agree best way is pay and do one but they take the **** and get away with it because of their ignorance.
