For fans of Quattro and the R8, we have to salute Ferrari for 1) going 4WD for the first time and 2) trying to enter the "Chelsea Tractor" brigade.
Unveiled on ferrari.com, the Ferrari FF is one of the company's most revolutionary models yet. The name is an acronym for Ferrari Four, referring to the four-seat layout and the adoption of four-wheel drive. This is the first ever Ferrari to put its power to all four wheels.
In fact, the FF purports to be the most practical and versatile Ferrari model yet. Boot capacity is 450 litres, which is as much as many family saloons offer. It can be extended to 800 litres by folding the rear seats.
If you doubt the eligibility of the FF into the Ferrari Hall of Fame then take a look at the engine details. It's a new 6.3-litre V12 petrol engine, which produces 651bhp. This is fed through a dual-clutch 'F1' gearbox to all four wheels.
Performance, as you'd expect, is stunning. Ferrari claims that the four-seater will hit 62mph in just 3.7 seconds, on the way to a top speed of about 208mph. The latest magnetorheological damping system and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes will ensure that the driver can handle that performance with ease.
The FF replaces the Scaglietti model, which was also a four-seat coupé. Pininfarina designed both cars, though the new FF looks very different to its predecessor. The front lights are reminiscent of the 458 Italia's, but the rest of the car is unique.
Ferrari will show the FF for the first time in public at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
