"We're disappointed by the delay, but we'd rather they take the time to get the vehicles right," said Marc Cannon, spokesman for the AutoNation dealer group, which has seven U.S. Fiat dealerships.

The latest delay in Alfa Romeo's resumption of U.S. sales — now pushed back to mid-2013 — is bad news for more than 100 of Chrysler's best dealers. They expected the sporty Italian brand's American reboot to help cover the cost of expensive new dealerships they built to sell Fiats.

Fiat SpA controls Chrysler Group and owns Alfa Romeo.

The delay is a disappointment to the dealers, who competed to win the Fiat franchise. Neither the Fiat 500's price nor sales volume is enough to support a dealership solo. Every day that Alfa slips past the previous target of late 2012 to start U.S. sales hurts. Dealers will want Fiat to help them absorb the blow, either with financial considerations or other vehicles to sell.

Fiat has 102 stores in the U.S., with 28 scheduled to open this year. Fiat reportedly delayed the new models to save cash during the European financial crisis and to tweak them to suit American tastes.

Alfa had planned to begin sales of its striking 4C sports car late in 2012, followed by the Giulia sport sedan and a midsize crossover in 2013 and a Giulia wagon in 2014.

It now plans to bring the MiTo subcompact and 4C to the U.S. in 2013. A compact crossover may also arrive in 2013. The Giulia sedan and wagon Alfa expects to be the heart of its U.S. lineup have been pushed back to 2014, along with the Giulietta compact and a two-seat convertible. A large sedan may come later.

Alfa has scrapped plans to build a midsize crossover at Chrysler's Jeep assembly plant in Toledo, Ohio. It was expected to be one of the brand's top sellers.

Chrysler-Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has threatened to shut Alfa down unless it dramatically improved sales and finances.

This Alfa back to the US saga has been trundling on for years.

I remember 2007 being the comeback year and its kept shifting. I certainly would not have spent lots of my greenbacks to build a new showroom based on Alfas record of promises for the US.

I've always been an Alfa nut but ......

Matt. It'll be 2014 before we get them. Full steam ahead on the GTS hunt.

Its weird, I have been thinking this past week about not getting the GTS as the prices have stabilised again, and there is nothing decent under £60k. Now Alfa are giving me more time, so I might get back on the case.

I am in the process of buying 2 x 1000 sqft new offices and I have to find £75k deposit, so that would be my GTS money out the window. I have no pension at the moment and I turned 40 this year, so I have to grow up sometime.

TBH I can make a steal with these offices as nobody has any money at the moment. If I can pay the £160k mortgage off in 10 years (one will be rented out during this time), I can retire with a £2k per month income just from the offices. There is another thing, the offices are in a block of 6, 2 on each floor and I have just learned that the builder is going to rent the other 2 floors as they cant sell them at the moment, they will probably remain empty then they are going to go for change of use, converting them into 4 luxury apartments. That would then leave the way open for me to do the same, and I could sell in 5 years time and make a killing as each apartment would be worth £250k easy.

I know it's a no brainer but I love my motors as you all know, and life's for living.

Might end up just buying a 32 or 42 for £10k and just keep it.

Think I would go for a 32 you know, but they always break
