F1 to end the use of Lollypop girls in 2018

Good! I totally agree with the decision they have no place in the modern formula, it's an out dated notion and is putting off potential female fans... it should be about the pinnacle of performance

I agree with some of the info on the older BBC article especially the opinions of the Silverstone Director pretty much sum it all up

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/42346331

"There is a perception that this is Silverstone's view but actually we think its an egalitarian world and I don't want my daughter growing up thinking that lycra is what she ought to aspire to."

In a high profile sport, at a high profile moment, there is no other outcome that they could choose.

Does anyone think the "girls" themselves should be asked?

A friend's wife used to do this and she loved it. Was she treated as an object of desire - yes by some. That would be the case where ever she went. In a word "stunning". Was she treated badly by the organisers - absolutely not. Just the opposite in fact. Oh, nearly forgot, Karen also has a PhD. Which her "modelling" work helped to fund.

Agreed, in the current climate it is almost inevitable. Sadly, the bleeding heart liberals won't be happy until everyone has their knickers in a twist about everything. A little mature commonsense needed I think.

I can’t get excited either way, but certainly don’t buy into the notion that pretty girls are outdated and being exploited
in the same way as I doubt the male equivalent are either.

I have done a couple of charity photo shoots where I arranged for models to come and people got to take pics of their cars
and a pretty girl and a number of women joined in as well. One of the girls dream job was to be an F1 Grid girl !!

My daughter does cheerleading at Uni and they do the odd football match - guessing that will get banned next and the girls will lose the money they get paid which they use for international tours !

They have been discussing this at length on GMB for the last few weeks.

I think F1 should do a competition each year for local schools at each GP circuit and the prize is to be the lollipop person...Or get each team to.

Just have to watch MOtoGP and WSB more...

Sex Sells, didn't anyone spot the irony of the #metoo actresses in sexy outfits?

Was listening on the radio of a former model who loved being a 'grid girl' and said that it was a great opportunity for women and they were treated very well, riders and mechanics treated them as part of the team and essential for sponsors as being a moving billboard. I'm sure you could and some do use men too, so banning the 'profession' is barking.

Here's a few examples

Yes, but. It's not just about those girls. It's about what it portrays as acceptable attitude towards any 'girl' However this is a huge oversimplification, and I will need some wine soon :)

Agree with this.
The world is too PC now.
I would love to dress up in uniform and stand in the pit lane. I wouldn’t feel abused or exploited, I would just use it as an opportunity to ogle the cars.
I was also under the misguided impression that the girls applied to do it and got paid for it.
By this rationale they should ban boxing , as it seems a terrible message that men should aspire to be aggressive fighters and get paid millions of pounds for it.

Sorry MrC - I don't see the parallel. Do I look at a "pit girl" the same way I looked at my Mother? Of course not. But why not - they are both women. Okay - a bad example but context plays an important part in the rationale here. I would prefer to have the opportunity to judge for myself rather than be dictated to by some do-gooder with their own agenda.

However, more importantly, I've ordered the Bussiere we discussed :thumb3:

You don't. Some do <shrug> Doesn't mean banning pit girls will stop that behaviour.

I think the evolution of the human race ,society and technology is taking all the fun out of life .... in 20 years it will be so dull.
We will just be glued to our smartphones

Sad times, the UK / western world is far too PC. Everyone so easily upset and wants everyone to hear all about it at great length.

These grid girls choose to be there to earn good money and have a good day out.

I actually know an ex grid girl who met and married the boss of a firm that preps race cars, so not really a bad move for either of them.

Not really watched F1 for the last 10 yrs so it won’t affect me anyway.

I can't see this being down to political correctness... it's not cracking racist jokes on the TV ffs.

The TV coverage has been showing minimal clips of the grid girls for years so if you are watching they are irrelevant.

If you have tickets on the day and you decide to take your family or partner then it's potentially awkward (for example: did she catch me staring at her clevage????)

Sex doesn't really sell any more it's not the 80's/90s... progressive atitudes sell. F1 needs to attract a younger and more diverse audience if it wishes to survive into the future, old management with the accompanying atitudes would have driven the brand into the ground similar to British Home Stores.... you got to get with the times people .
