F430 Spider 16M - Thoughts

For a little while now I've been toying with the idea of adding a 16M to the fleet next year. The thing is though, I'd want to drive it. Now this may seem rather obvious, but almost all of the ones I've seen advertised seem to have ludicrously low miles and so therefore are rarely driven.

In fact looking at the ones on PH at the mo it's almost as if every mile you do takes £1 off the value.

So is the secret to buy a *cheap* one that's already got a few miles on it and add some more - say an '08 one with 20k on it and taking it to 40k over 2 or 3 years.
Or to pay the premium for a car with 2k on it and take it up to 22k?

Dan the 16M is stunning, a track focused convertible car sounds pointless but on the road it would be sublime.
They are very rare, built to celebrate 16 F1 constuctors titles and only 499 built, believed to be only 49 uk rhd examples so there is a chance each one is unique.
Price wise, at the moment they are still very high, Meridien has one in, Nero, 800 miles, 180k i think. I dont think many owners will put high miles on them, if you look at the Scuderia's for sale, you will be lucky to find one for sale with 20k or more miles on and they first came out on an 08 registration; so the chances of getting a 16M with around 20k miles on it would be slim. Also Dan, i dont think you will find one on a 58 plate, if i remember correctly, they were 09, 59 and there maybe a couple on a 10 plate.

Would i buy one?? Yes of course i would, there are still quite a few delivery mile examples out there like the one in Meridien i mentioned and Graypaul Nottingham have a couple delivery mile cars in so prices will still stay high, in 18 months time when they will be 2-3 years old, then they should be about 130k. Lastly regarding colour, i dont think there will be an issue here as they are so rare and like i said, each one in the u.k is probably unique.

Interesting, clearly I need to learn a bit more about the model/s.
So is there a spider version of the Scuderia that's not a 16M or is that the Spider IS the 16M?

I don't think I'm in the Market specifically for a limited edition car that needs to be a garage queen in order to maintain it's "investment" status. The thing is, I love my stripped out Lotus and I love my Italian V8, and so a spider scuderia seems to me to be the best of both worlds and something that I'd enjoy thrashing about.

Dan, great car and doesn't suffer the wobble you get with most convertables ... A brilliant piece of Ferrari art ..... I would have one over the Coupe any time, but it is a very rare car than you will see money fall off it wonce you add miles .... Bet you will not see many if these over the next fewe years with more than 20k on the clock ... and thats the thing. But I can see why you would be very tempted.

The Scuderia Spider is a 16M. I dont think it will have to be a garage queen to maintain it's investment but i wouldn't put 8k miles a year on one as it would lose it's money. People that own the 16M like Scuderia and 360 challenge stradale wont use them that often.

Is it *that* much quicker with a standard 430 Spyder? If you found one specced with carbon brakes and lightweight seats, bet there wouldn't be a lot in it!

Except the £100k you'd save...

Yeah but the 16M is that more special, you could argue saying why dont you buy a 430 Coupe and add carbon seats, ceramic brakes and make it lighter instead of paying extra for a Scuderia.

Fair point Adam, but if you own a Scud, a 16M, CS or any special edition, they become too precious to drive. Seems a shame that they never get the chance to live to their potential unless in the hands of someone so wealthy that costs are irrelevant. And Dan is looking for a car to use for it's intended purpose! If I wanted to use it for 5-8k miles a year, better to have a tricked out 430 Spyder that you stand a chance of getting some money back on. I couldn't own a car and not be able to use it to its potential - I struggle to keep my mileage down to 5k miles per car as it is!

I couldn't have a car like a Scuderia and not use it, would want to use it every weekend without fail and go abroad in it, try and cover about 8k miles a year.

I agree... that's why I'd rather pay less for a 430, trick it out, do what I want in it, then sell it for waaaaay less than I would have lost before.

Take my DB9 - paid £50k, spending about £8-9k on it - lightened by 50kg, bumping power to over 500bhp, stiffening the shocks, making some better noises and smartening the looks. Sell it in 3yrs for £40k?

Had I bought a DBS for £120k, spend nothing on it but do 5k/yr in it. Sell it 3yrs for £70k? Big difference!

Yeah i see your point Lewis, depends how much people are prepared to pay for a limited edition plaque.

Agreed - wouldn't bother me, I'm not a good enough driver and don't spend enough time on track to appreciate the difference between something like a 430 and Scud. A few Pistonheads DB9 types have commented that they have tested the DBS and not made the jump - in the real world, which sadly we're forced to live in, it's almost impossible to tell the difference after you've stuck a sports exhaust on it.

However, if I could afford to do what I wanted... I'd have the plaque :)

I bet you would have a DBS if you could afford it as well :D:D i know i would, just for the noise and looks. The DB9 will sound brutal with the sports exhaust.

They all collectors cars and no one wants a 30k one....silly making them in low numbers...
I would buy a GT3 RS for what you want it for, you still cant put on silly miles but its easier to sell it with 40k than a ferrari
