The next generation of Alfa Romeo cars could offer Ferrari power under the bonnet.

Motoring industry journal Automotive News is reporting that a new V6 engine platform developed by Ferrari and Maserati could find its way into upcoming cars such as Alfa Romeo’s Giulia mid-sized sedan.

Set to be a rival to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3-Series, the Giulia is part of a plan to rejuvenate the Alfa Romeo brand, starting with the compact new 4C Coupe.

Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne told journalists at the 2014 Detroit motor show that exceptional engines and exciting dynamics were “things we need to go back to”, and that the brand needs to “rethink the elements that made Alfa a strong brand”.

The manufacturer made a point of pushing its rear-wheel-drive sporting heritage during a media launch for the new 4C and rumours persist that the brand’s current front-wheel-drive lineup, comprised of the MiTo and Giulietta hatchbacks, will be scrapped.

The most likely engine for a new Alfa Romeo performance sedan resides under the bonnet of the new Maserati Quattroporte.

Built by Ferrari, the 3.0-litre twin turbo V6 makes 301kW of power and 550Nm of torque, enough to give the Giulia considerable shove.

Ferrari’s California T will see the prancing horse mated with turbo power once more, thanks to a new 3.8-litre V8 that makes 412kW.

Indeed Nik, naturally aspirated V6 for Alfa, Maserati Turbo V6 and Ferrari V8

That way, you could rag the turbos off a scrap Maser and bolt them to the Alfa....happy days!

Now that sounds like a plan ;) Worst thing Alfa ever did was get rid of the V6, just hope it will be as good as the Busso though :)
