If it were me I wouldn’t be buying one which would be approaching 100,000 miles within a few years of ownership as it would be almost impossible to sell on, even at silly money depreciation would be significant. Better to buy the best you can and enjoy as only the best will appreciate.

After going looking at 4 now I have a few questions.

1) Control arms, it looks like these can now be refubished by VPS? Has anyone had this done sucessfully?

What is most likely to go bad, it looks like the bushes dry out and wear out, and someone else said the bolts can get seized.

The ball joints are built in and can't be replaced easily? Do some people just replace the bushings if the ball joints are ok?

2) Brake discs, are these still being supplied on the forum?? Or where is the best supplier?

3) Cam cover gaskets, are these really £500 a set? Guess maybe its not so bad, looks like a lot of cars do leak and or have been badly re sealed with sealant becuase of this?

4) One I looked at did have a small rattle/ticking sound a minute or so after cold start, maybe also just when I engaged the air con compressor, Cam Variators are a risk? Is there any info on how to spot if going bad, and is that a big expensive job to put right?

5) Corrosion, most will have some kind of surface rust/paint bubbleing on the subframes by now? The two I have looked at on a ramp did.

6) Wheels, I notice that at least one car I have looked at has an invoice for "straightening the wheels", the GS wheels are quite soft and prone to not being round? Another I looked at definitely had one that needs re balancing at least. If the wheels are beyond re-furb I'll need to get some more wheels, are they scarce on the S/H market or new?

Many Thanks, trying to balance which car is best and weigh up the costs of work.

I am going to get a PPI inspection of one car I have looked at even though I've driven it and had up on the ramp etc.

Most work I would undertake myself.
In regards control arms, I’ve had all 4 front arms refurbed by VPS. seems like a top job, and a relative bargain at around £1100 all in. They replaced all ball joints and bushings.

Most seem to be in the 40-55k range which seems good, yes would need to be something really special to go for one of them with over 70,000.

Mileage seems extra important in the word of Maserati, when I say low mileage garage queen I guess I mean 15-25k mile ones.

That sounds fantastic, good to know. Adding the cost up of new ones on Eurospares is sobering!

That's a minter and it's 3 miles from me, haven't completely ruled out but it's black on black which is maybe a bit boring. Will keep an eye on it. That's one of the cars I would describe as potentially a good one to park up but not to use...
As you can see your in quite a strong position , its a buyers market at present choose wisely and im sure your get there in the end , colour combo's are completely personal , dont be put off by what others deem not suitable for them , I know im quite the odd ball here myself

I presume you’ve seen this red one which seems to have had all the work done, cats, exhaust, brakes and clutch.
Yup, spoken to this guy. It does sound like a nice one, but not sure about solid red with the light leather. It seems like it’s been loved. Probably a reason that I SHOULD buy this one but my wife thinks the colour combo is a bit naff, it is sort of Ferrari colours. Kudos to the buyer for putting a proper add together with 80 photos. If it wasn’t 220 miles away I would have gone to look anyway :)

I have lots of different classic cars followed on car and classic and eBay, and it does seem like a lot has been for sale for 6 months or more, so hopefully yes, a buyers market, but I’m also sure that some people will just decide to hang on….

I actually wanted the rosso, but my wife was opposed. Oh well...even screwed that up with a silver F car.

I had one eye on this, looks a cherished car. Pilotsports all round (if I remember correctly) is a good start. Just couldn't justify double the cost of mine.

The black on black with 10k miles, I'd be scared to drive it, absolutely gorgeous condition it seems.

Nice to see these back on the up, the immaculate 57k miles Blu Mediterraneo Richard Grace had last year, now looks a bargain…….

That looks like the twin of mine! Not normally a fan of stripes but that actually works well. X-Pipe and Larinis?
