Thanks Matt, I'm just conscious I haven't committed (either one way or the other) to hotel accommodation for the Wed and Thurs to Robert as it was dependant on what others were planning on doing.

Cheers,

Enzo,
OK mate I will leave it as is, singles in the Modena hotel I think are a bit lower, the others there will maybe be a lower price but hen a supplement, so not a great deal different. Leave your options open mate..!!

Cheers
R

I know this maybe at the bottom of the list (if we have a list) but what walkies would be worth getting - I know T / Benny said something about the SCD use a good walkie ?

I have a couple that work OK, could be worth getting more, or just have all the mobile numbers..?? Convoy is better with radio though, at least the front and tail cars..!!

Yep, I mentioned this in the Chunnel Crossing thread (no idea why I wrote it in that one as opposed to this one). The ones SCD use are Mitex General UHF. They seem to be miles better than the Motorola ones, and are highly recommended by security firms and the like. I think Sporting Bears might even use these ones as well. They are licenced, which means they have a stronger range than standard walkie talkies.

£150 for a twin pack from Maplins (i.e. £75 each if you go halves with someone) - http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/mitex-general-5w-uhf-radios-2-pack-a68jx

If people are worried about having to fork out £75 for something they might only use for this one trip, I'm sure there'll be people from SCD that would be willing to buy it (maybe for a small discount as it's been used?). People on the SCD forum quite often ask about where to get them from, so you should be able to sell it on (should you want to).

If anyone wants to get some..?? Is there a point in splitting a pack, one is not much good to most people..??

I only needed one Robert, as others in SCD use the same walkie talkies. But I went halves with someone else from SCD that also wanted one.

When I spoke to Mitex a few months ago, they said that if enough people were buying them, then a group discount can be negotiated! :)

UHF is great for towns, but does not have a great range, OK for maybe a couple of miles though dependent on the terrain..!!

It's for such as when someone has to stop for an unplanned leak and might not be sure of the route at a junction, they can catch up with advice from another radio..!!

Hopefully the "unplanned leak" is code for toilet stop, rather than someone breaking down LOL

Message from Maserati....

Registrations to the Maserati100 Gathering are open again, thanks to overwhelming response!

Really? Overwhelming you say...? So overwhelming there are places clearly remaining unfilled.

WOW, that's a surprise Drew, they must have got a few extra places put in to cope with the staggering demand..!!

I got given a pair of walkies (suspect cheapies) but says on the box about 3.5km - in no way do I understand UHF but wouldn't these be OK if on the same channel / freqency ?

T - did you get any idea on numbers compared to discount - maybe get some of the SCD in on the group buy ?

Depends what frequency range they cover. e.g. VHF walkie talkies aren't compatible with UHF ones.

TBH the price Mitex quoted was without VAT and P&P. By the time you added on the extras it was cheaper for me to buy it from Maplins. Even the guy from Mitex suggested I get it from Maplins as they were cheaper (when VAT & P&P was taken into account). He did say however he could offer a small discount (circa 5% if a few packs were bought, or slightly more if even more were bought).

As was commented in the Chunnel thread, £75 for something someone may only use on this trip is rather expensive. So it might be better to get a few for the trip and then sell them at a small discount (i.e. loss) to SCD members wanting them, as opposed to going in on a big group buy. Thoughts everyone?
