Not Alfa or even Italian

Ah, so the difference here is that, being a Mercedes, you can get all the replacement parts! Yes, they actively support ALL their cars. The guys at Emblem are restoring something old and Merc-tasty and Miles was telling me how easy it is to get any component they need.

I think you need a valid MOT to get a plate from a car. That may take a while....

Looks like they found this at the bottom of a canal.

I think you can apply to keep it, if you are the registered keeper, if and when a car is written off, but it needs to be registered and motd prior to it. The only way to get that number, even then their is no guarantee, is to restore it.

That looks like they need all of them apart from the grille

IIRC you can get the plate off a car as long as it's been continuously SORN'd for under 5 years

I'm pretty sure you can get a 'friend' in the business to MOT it just before it gets crushed!
There's always ways round these things!

From the DVLA.
You have an old vehicle which
is not registered at DVLA.
Can you register the vehicle
and transfer or retain its
registration number?
It is possible for you to register the vehicle at
DVLA, but you will not be able to transfer or
retain the registration number.
For more details you can visit www.gov.uk or see
leaflet How to register your ‘old' vehicle (V848)
which is available from DVLA.

I guess they keep the old ones that are out of circulation and sell on. You only buy the right to use the number on a vehicle, you don't actually own it, if I read the rules correctly.

They usually auction the valuable ones , and the ones that spell out a name if you space them out incorrectly

Then the police stop you , give you a couple of chances to change it back then they confiscate it to sell on to the next mug

I think you'll actually find that once they've gone out of circulation, that's it.

'Previously issued registrations are not resurrected for sale, even if they are no longer on a vehicle. Should this situation change, we will ensure that full details appear on this website. You may email us with your contact details and we will let you know if there are any policy changes - '

I can confirm this is untrue. My mother had a car written off, and the DVLA then sold the registration on to someone else before processing my parents' application to retain it. It's now on someone else's car, the DVLA agree that the rights to it are with my mother but that they can't take it off someone else's car. They admit they resold it before they should have done.

So it *is* true, but the DVLA screwed up....
