Spoke to my Alfa guy and he reckons drop the sump and look at the shells. In his opinion any damage always shows there first.

If the engine does need to come out he suggests dropping it all out of the bottom.

I took everything out from underneath when I did the engine swap in my old E30. It was so much easier and straight forward than taking it out the top. As yours is FWD I would imagine it would be even easier as everything's contained in the engine bay. Get the GS off of the lift and use that to raise the whole car away from the engine/subframe. Might be a nice easy job.

Yeah, thats the problem, need the GS off the ramp. Anyway, yesterday proved that I won't be needing the £2k I have put aside for the engine....I am off down the pub then!

Picked up the rad from Meridien Modena yesterday so need to get on with it. If I can get the rads back in, then I can get it off the ramp whilst the front bumper is being painted.

i really would just start with big end shells, a rebuild is pointless if it just needs those, they might be ok! but replace them anyway.

dont run it any more.

Thats the plan Beau, they are only £60 so silly not to whilst I have to sump off.

Can you look out for a donor P2 V6 for me, there are so many bits that are broken this might be the best route.

So it should come in, all done and detailed for £2k making the total price £4750, then another £250 to get the Cat D removed and Ill be laughing at £5k

Being a one owner, 25k miller, value will be in the region of £9-10k

I may also do a cam belt (waiting on the last owner to call me) and a clutch.

Can you ask him should I drop the whole subframe and engine in one go with the suspension and wishbones or take the subframe first then drop the engine???

I want to take a look at it all and the brake fluid has leaked out so its no bother to disconnect the front lines to the callipers???

£250 to get the CAT D removed...how does that work?

A company called Autoalign will inspect the car and report their findings to HPI. If its satisfied, the cat C or D will be removed and the car re categorised as: Inspected.

Thought you only needed inspection for Cat C? and they stayed highlighted in their history?

Different type of inspection Allan. For a Cat C you also need a VIC (vehicle identity check) which is there to prove that the repaired car has not had it's identity messed with. There was an issue with Cat cars being bought and ID swapped with stolen cars. Once the VIC is done, it's clear but until it's done, you can't re-tax or get a new V5C.

For Cat C and D, Matt is correct that you can have it Autolign inspected which changes the category to cat D inspected which is not fully clear but the next best thing.

Then I turned my attention to the engine.

I put some oil in and it came straight out sump. On closer inspection there was a hole I could get my little finger in. So I plugged it with chemical metal, filled up with oil and put the battery on charge.

Ok, time to start it to see how bad running a V6 engine without any oil in would sound???

To say I was overjoyed was an understatement, it purrrrs likes a kitten :)

What was the oil pressure showing Matt ?
They always sound better in the flesh than when you record them.
I remember first starting the 4200 after renewing the oil water pump and to say i was like a dog with 2 dicks is an understatement.
Look forward to seeing her finished.
Phil.

Matt says it's cat D at the moment, so no point having it inspected?

I understood it went down 1 category...a cat C to a D and a cat D to cat inspected.

So basically the cat D would be removed but still carry a marker on HPI of: INSPECTED.

If the car is recorded cat D as I understand then it can not be removed it will remain. Still a good buy though, especially as you are going to keep the car.

Cheers Andy, cheers nick!

Spider goes to one side for now as all the parts have been sourced and I have to finish the GS as I need the ramp to drop the engine on the Spider.
