If the car is recorded cat D as I understand then it can not be removed it will remain. Still a good buy though, especially as you are going to keep the car.

From their website:

Once the Vehicle has passed the inspection(Which is backed by HPI and MIRRC Thatcham) HPI will then change the Categorisation on their register of write offs from VCAR- Vehicle Condition Alert Register Category C or D to Condition Inspected.A report on the Vehicle and a Certificate of Inspection(Once the Vehicle passes the Inspection) will be supplied in three to five working days and also you will receive a letter of confirmation from HPI.Please note we cannot inspect Category A or B vehicles for reclassification even if the Vehicle has been VIC tested and a Log Book(V5) have been issued.

Update:
Well, after I bodged some Chemical Metal filler in the hole in the sump and managed to get her to hold oil, she has started weeping, no bother, this time I have a receptacle underneath to catch is as I spent last Saturday AM digging out the 7L of 10w40 that she deposited on my shingle driveway.

The GranSport is on the ramp at the moment so I am resisting starting to take the Spider apart as that will lead to 2 cars in a broken state.

I managed to finish fitting the new rad in the GS today so tomorrow I will finish it and get the bumper put back on just loosely and get it off the ramp and over to the body shop for bumper and bonnet repaint.

Back to the Spider
I have got some parts on there way at last.
- Part worn Dunlop MAXX RT 225/45/17 with 5mm to match the other front one - £21
- Dash and steering wheel airbags, pretentioners and Airbag ECU - £100
- New radiator - £38

I have to get the front wheel that took the brunt of the accident and has a ripped tyre, straightened - £75

Then she will go on the ramp:
Front bumper removal (easy)
Rad, condenser and fan pack removed
Lower rad support remove and replace (bent)
Straighten the vertical rad supports
Drop engine and subframe.

The engine will go off to have the crank inspected end shells replaced as a matter of caution (£150)
replace the sump
replace cambelt
replace various other broken or bent parts like the exhaust down pipe with the cat in it.
replace inner driveshaft gaiter (£20)
reinstall engine on used subframe.
replace ruptured brake pipe and bleed the brakes
replace bent bonnet hinges

Then she will drive and be subject to some paint and detailing ready for the Spring, Ill aim to bring her to Ace in March.

A lot of the GTA owners put the CF2 manifolds on as they don't have cats (hopefully one will be along to correct me if i am wrong), may be worth doing that, my V6 only has one cat. also there was a sump on flea bay the other night, will see if i can find it in a bit.

Ah, so its the same as the Maserati, you have header cats then another cat further down the line then the Lambda sensor???

I think mine are the ones on the left:

You are correct fella, we like to fit CF2 manifolds from the 3.0GTV.

But you have to remember it'll be much much louder and that you may have to change other bits of the exhaust due to the flanges etc :)

The lambda should be totally fine, it's exactly why the 3.0GTV manifolds are so sort after as it's essentially a straight swap :)

Only thing you'd have to remember is that the Spider will need a remap after :)

Well, its been a few weeks and not a lot has happened as the Maserati has been causing me major headaches and blocking the ramp so I cant get on with the engine removal.

Some small progress.
1. I got the airbag kit, steering wheel airbag, passenger dash airbag, 2 seatbelt pretentioners and the airbag ECU. Not fitted it yet but at least I have them.
2. Had the bent alloy straightened, its now only 1mm out across the flat so Ill stick that one on the back, also had new tyre fitted.
3. Rad turned up, something silly like £35 delivered plus vat for a new one, the beauty of loads of parts sitting on shelves I suppose.

Thats it, when I get back from hols 3rd week in Feb, Ill be cracking on with dropping the engine. and I have a target of by birthday, 1st April to get it done by but frankly its a bit of an ask.

Did just that when I parted out my alfa 166 super. Whole subframe full of engine , wheels and shocks left on my drive after car was lifted off. Remember to disconnect lambda sensor!

When we took the W8 engine out of the Passat we dropped the whole front sub frame out of the bottom it was a really simple job with such a big engine. I believe the Alfa boys do the same with the V6 FWD engines but I can find out for you if you like.

Ok, GranSport now finished and off the ramp, time to get on with the Spider. Got the manual to remove the engine, that's the first job, after a thorough inspection of the underside.

I have a TIG welder who's now going to repair the sump, wing mirror and aircon pump so that will save a couple of hundred quid.

That's the bit that needs changing... Huge tyre wear at that setting.

Make sure you've got a decent fire extinguisher mate, especially when working on the sump... oil burns.
