What car have tested the diesel, gave it 3 stars and wrote this misleading piece of drivel...
Quote...
The switch from front- to rear-wheel drive allows the car to sit more comfortably next to executive saloon rivals, such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class than the old 159 did,

What car have always been anti Alfa and pro German ;)

There is nothing about this car I don't like. The only issue may be that the quality of Alfa dealers is patchy. I get my Granturismo serviced at my main dealer (Maranello) they always do me a fair price, the level of customer support is excellent and I'm fussy. I also have a FIAT 500 - it get's serviced at FIAT/ALFA Slough - nice people do a good job. But I'm not sure they have the resources available to offer the kind of customer service you'd expect on a £60k car. Although they are perfect for my FIAT.

I think the only reason you'd buy a new Petrol Ghibli over the Alfa is the customer sales and service experience. The Alfa does kind of kill the Petrol Ghibli in my view. Just shows that Maserati should stick at making elegant GT cars.

This new Alfa platform will lead to a 3 door coupe I guess and a convertible in a couple of years. I'm keeping my cash for that.

I'd like a SportWagon version, but seems the SUV is now the larger 5 door body of choice and there will not be a Giulia SW

I was interested in replacing my (nearly 5 yr old) Giulietta with a 2.0 turbo Giulia but although they havent released prices for petrol yet it looks like a reasonable spec will be over £30k.... Far too expensive i reckon compared to being able to get a 2.0t XE Jag in full leather for £26k....

I would have thought both cars should be similar price and no way could i justify extra £5k for Alfa

Just my inital thoughts....

Id wait and see until the prices come out. Isnt the XE similarly priced to the BM 3? I cant imagine the Alfa being any more..

Wester has stated the brand can carry premium pricing and the Marchionne strategy of built in Italy is adding to the price. If you compare Giulietta list prices with their rivals they are at the thick end. The discounts reflect the true value the market ascribes to the brand. The senior management need to smell the coffee.

No price advantage, drive is only as good as the competition and the dealer network not fit to compete. It is going to be a tough ask. I would love the brand to succeed but feel the Giulia will need to be joined by the rest of the range in short order. The onslaught of new models and niches on shared platforms from the competition will be difficult to beat.

I bought a petrol Ghibli instead of waiting for the Giulia even knowing what was coming.

I've had decent service from Alfa dealers over the past three years. It didn't factor into the equation.

What did was that the Ghibli is a Maserati.

Yes the XE is price around the 3 series.......I have (or will do when it gets delivered in two weeks) a XE 2.0d R Sport 180 and with a few option came in at 35k...Was looking at a 320d and 420d Gran Coupe and they were around the same money maybe a grand higher. The XE starts at 27k for the petrol and just under 30k for the diesel.

There is nothing about this car I don't like. The only issue may be that the quality of Alfa dealers is patchy. .

I think that's the biggest hurdle Alfa have to overcome. Their dealer network was never great and they've let even that poor network wither further over the last ten years when they've had no models worth selling.

I'm still on alfaowners.com and it seems to be increasingly about buying a £500 shed and spannering it along until it is SORN'ed for good. That customer base just isn't going to stump up £60,000.

If I bought a new, or new-ish Alfa, I can't think where I would take it for servicing.

Alfa are almost at the point where they have to behave like a new manufacturer entering a new market for the first time. That takes massive and brave investment. Much as I love the brand, my prognosis of their ability to do this isn't good.

Mind you, that might mean there will be some very cheap Giulia's available in eighteen months time - that is how I bought my 166, for buttons with full manufacturer's warranty still in place.
