My previous car was a Z4 and I don't cut hair ! The 3.0 is the one to get straight six . better than the Revy Honda as capable as a cockster not as feminine as a merc Slk and more reliable than any itailian car . Shame there got that image as I think the styling was very different compared to all the other drivel in its time . Iam a little biased mine you .

I'd buy the best of the original SLKs that you can. They're brilliant cars and £5k will find you a belter which has the potential to appreciate as the bad ones are now hitting the scrap yards, leaving the cream at the top. Had an s2000 and you're right that you now need £10k for a good one. It needs revving to be fun, feels like it has no torque at all until 7000rpm. The MX-5 is brilliant too but Phil has one.....

A cheap Boxster may not turn out to be. The early cars are not that good and underpowered. The interior is also rubbish.

Mav is right that the z4 3.0 is a great car too. We've actually known each other since the z4 days as I had a z4m coupe for a few years when they were new.

The other car I'd consider is the Audi TT. The original design is a classic and it's one of the only Audis that I like. £5k will get you a belter, much like the SLK.

The issue is that buying a convertible can give a very poor projection of the owner, so how about we have a cool wall:

Sub Zero:
2005 Alfa Spider 3.2V6 in Red :)

Cool:
Any Maserati
Any Alfa
Any Ferrari
Any Lambo
Fiat Barchetta
Fiat 500
Any Pre 1970 Classic that is not American
S2000
2CV
Z4
350/360Z

Unsure:
Audi TT

Uncool:
MX5
Micra CC
Any Peugeot
M3 Cab
Z3

Seriously Uncool:
Maserati Spyder 4300

Dont touch a Z4 they have an extreamly common ABS unit failure rate . I had to repair one last year . Its £1000 if you can find one as they all go . I ended up havin Remans bodge two together in the end as there were none in the country .

I had a brera 2.2 as a courtesy car for a week, hated the engine...thirsty and slow.....
Its sad but out of the current Alfa range id only buy a diesel, look for a diesel Spyder....faster and more economical

I'm gonna take issue with your Cool Wall.

How is a Fiat 500 cool?
How is any Ferrari cool?
No BMW built after 2000 will be cool.
2CV??????
There are some very cool American classics as there are many pre-1970 'classics' that are very uncool.
S2000 Cool? If you're a fan of the first Fast & the Furious films maybe.

Fiat 500s are certainly cool:

Except the Abarth news ones, particularly the 595 and 695 which are both ace.

Old 500s are sub zero cool. I'd love one. Which would make it less cool probably.

M3 cab is definitely uncool, I'm with Matt on that.
