GT - Early morning startup

Hi - this is not how I expected my first post to go, but seems it will be my main hurdle to ownership...

I am very familiar with the exhaust note (hence why I am here), but in terms of starting the car, how loud is it? Are there any aftermarket kits where you could park it in "quiet" exhaust mode?

I ask as I need to "sneak out" early for golf or work and my daughter's bedroom is right above where the GT would be parked. Last thing I want to do is wake her up.

I apologise for what is a ridiculous question.

Cold start is LOUD. I have an M3 V8 with a modded exhaust that I used to commute early in and had cold start coded out as many do with that car. I haven’t heard of anything like that for the GT and I can see an issue that the valves relies on vacuum pressure to close so will always be loud for a second or two on startup even if cold start could be safely coded out of the ecu. Might need a different car for golf!

Morning and welcome.

If you have a standard system you won’t have an issue

Your issue will be if a 4.2 you don’t have valves so fitting an X you won’t be sneaking out of anywhere.

If it’s a 4.7, you have valves so an X can be silenced but upon turning the key the valves are open until vacume is generated so you will get an initial BARK.

I would see this as an opportunity to develop your daughter - she can rise early, attack the day and be more successful in life - problem sorted

4.7 with a XPipe me thinks
I like that! I have a couple of slumbering girls that rarely see the AM

Welcome to the forum. I agree with the above, if your exhaust is standard, you’ll be fine. I have upset my friends neighbours (mostly tongue in cheek, I think) as the bark surprised them first time, but then my exhaust is a bit louder than standard.

Bark then rumble. You'll be fine. I think adding an x-pipe didn't do much to louden the initial bark on mine, so unless you go the full @conaero asbo setup your daughter will sleep soundly, her dreams only of endless Tuscan days, sweeping roads, olives and vineyards. It'll do her cultural awareness the power of good.

Thanks for the feedback. I think the standard sound is great so won't be going aftermarket route.

My daughter is 2, so doesn't need too much encouragement to get out of bed in the morning!

Thanks - it just occurred to me there is a GT owner around the corner from me. I might see if the owner is friendly enough to demo for me.

All good feedback, I guess it's not something to worry about as it would be once in a while, rather than every day.

No doubt I will be back with lots more questions.

Welcome to the club!

I'm not sure what some of the others are talking about, the cold start is loud! (and louder still with aftermarket xpipe)

My nearest neighbour is at least 150m from me, and they can hear me start my car in the garage! ( but they don't mind lol)

That being said, after the initial bark it does quieten down, once the vacuum shuts the valves, and the secondary air pump stops pumping air in for the emissions. This can also be stopped quicker by giving it a little bit of throttle, although I like to let the car sort itself out naturally.

I imagine you could fit electronic exhaust valves in place of the OE vacuum ones, and just have them on a switch, if it was a big problem.
But just tell ya wife and daughter to suck it up. It's totally worth it!

I agree start up is a loud “bark”, louder if you go X or H pipe but the the valves soon close and quieten things down.
I do early starts at least once a week, it wakes my daughter but not my son (they are in their 20’s and should have moved out anyway).
If I was using the car as a daily I would definitely consider electric valves.
My neighbour has an F type and that has a “bark”on start up ( but nothing in the level of the Strad, but even that wakes my wife but not me.

It's ironic that when I used to start my GTS (X pipe fitted) in early mornings, Joseph never even stirred.

However, the moment the neighbours (2 doors away) came out in their dressing gowns to have a moan at me, they would wake him up!
