2007 QP GT Sport rear brake problem, advice appreciated

Hi guys, had my 2007 QP Sport GT for just 3 weeks from dealer, serviced properly, all going lovely then big rattling/ metallic noise from rear driver side brakes. Pads and disks seem fine - still 3mm on there (had local garage have a quick look to make sure nothing was dropping off/ it was safe etc), but they suspect that possibly a spring had come loose in the drum assembly? Obviously I'll raise this with the dealer after the bank holiday but your thoughts and ideas on what the problem is/ might be would be appreciated. Also, who is best for brakes? - I'm based in the midlands. Cheers.

Thanks for the reply Dicky, it sounds like you've seen this issue before?

The guy at the local garage tried to help but he didn't have any Maserati experience. Is this an issue only a Maserati specialist should look at, and if so am I looking at much of a cost?

If it's nothing major then I'll cover it myself, otherwise I'd need to involve the dealer/ warranty company.

Thanks again for your help. This certainly won't be my last Maz so I guess we might meet as I move up to newer/ different models at some point. Cheers.

No problem, it's a tyre garage job, the Tpms sensor will have come loose and be rattling around inside the tyre. That's if my diagnosis from your description is correct.

Ah, I think that this simple issue isn't the problem then.

The mechanic took the wheel off and then rotated the wheel which then made this metallic grinding/scraping noise as it rotated.

The disk isn't warped (no juddering or in fact no effect on driving whatsoever apart from the noise), there is 3 mm on the pads and the calliper isn't binding, hence why he thought it may be a loose spring or other component in the drum?

Confused ! - :frusty5:

Surely this is the handbrake shoes giving up, or does that not happen on the QPs?

Yes sorry, you can tell that I'm no mechanic, ! - the drum situated directly behind the rear driver side drilled disks, which I presume is the handbrake drum?

I realised my thinking was a bit **** as soon as I posted. Which is why I edited my post :)

My guess is the shoes have delaminated. Not sure how much commonality there is between the coupes and the QP for the handbrake, but Eurospares says the shoes are common so.....

Do you use the handbrake at all?
Were you driving when the noises started?

The handbrake seems fine, no warning light for the electric parking brake which is what I normally use. The noise has gotten louder just in the few miles I've driven since I noticed it, the the garage/ home, at nice steady low speed.

I think it's off to my (not so) local Maserati specialist on Tuesday. I'm based in Birmingham so any recommendations of good service appreciated from other Midlands owners. Thanks

A grinding/scraping won't be a Tpms sensor, you'd said a rattling/metallic noise before. Off to your local specialist and hope it's not too bad for you. I've heard Migliore are good in Bromsgrove.

Hand brake shoes & dislodged spring I'll wager..
QP is the same as 4200..GS GT etc

Cheers

Thanks Dicky, obviously a bit difficult to correctly describe a noise sensibly. As you say, off to the specialist. I'll give the guys at Bromsgrove a call.

Looks like we've got a book running. I'll announce the winner for bragging rights as soon as I get a result. Thanks all.

Vic at Migliore will be able able to sort this out with a minimum of fuss.

Did mine recently, very straightforward, backing off the adjusters is a bit fiddely through the inspection hole, but no suprises, just take the rust edge of the drums with a grinder, to make refitting easy with the adjuster set to Give a "snug" fit!
