my alfa GT has been relatively trouble free since I got it but she is gettin on now. yesterday she threw a "motor management failure" warning. drives either fine or as only 3 cylinders firing and the fuel gauge bounces up and down constantly? anyone any ideas.............very un-nerving seeing a CEL on something other than Marci LOL

We assume JTD?

Fuel gauge bouncing is probably unrelated or some sort of electrical issue due to the warning light.

Your issue is almost certainly your EGR valve.

Dont buy a new one, follow this guide:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/nxgz2frzy0y/How-to+Fix+the+EGR+on+a+1.9JTD.pdf

Also, is your turbo making a siren noise from cold? This is the twin vari turbo impellers being gummed up and giving over boost, another associate of the Motor Management Failure.

take off the lower turbo pipe and spray Mr Muscle Oven Cleaner in there and leave over night. You may need to repeat this a few times to unstick your turbo.

Also, you need to check the turbo pipes. The lower one goes porous then when you expect demand from the turbo, it collapses, choking the turbo and again throwing the MMF.

If I were you, I would buy a silicone turbo kit off eBay, a can of Mr Muscle and some carb cleaner for the EGR rebuild and you will be amazed how well it will run again.

All in, your looking at £120

yes JTD, should have said.
thanks Matt. turbo pipes replaced at end of last year and I'm sure the EGR valve was too since that was the issue last year, turbo was sounding fine. work will not allow access to your link, but will check it when I get home. had a new fuel pipe fitted a month or so ago so was wondering if the garage has maybe knocked something electrical loose whilst doing it to do with the fuel sensor.........my usual garage is closed for two weeks for a holiday...........aint that always the way!

Ok, just because the EGR was replaced don't disregard it, they soot up quickly.

Oh, and if there is a hole in the black plastic cap with a bit of tape coving it, they cleaned it as per the guide and charged you for a new part!...seen it before.

I would check the injector wiring too, as you said, they may have knocked something.

MAF is also another possibility but unlikely.
