Throttle Pedal Pot

Hi all,

Like most owners, I have been chasing CEL's for a little while now. I had the throttle body replace with a contactless upgrade and that fixed the limp mode associated with the CEL's. I also replaced both lambda probes which got rid of about 50% of the frequency of CEL's but still I have had a CEL intermittently that "seemed" to be associated with the throttle pedal.

Whenever the light would come on, a slight dab of the throttle would cause it to disappear for a while until I came back to idle when it would come on again. I pulled the throttle pot apart to check the resistor track for wear and as you can see from the associated photo, it was knackered!!

I ordered a new pedal pot from Eurospares and fitted it today. RESULT!! Perfect idle, no hesitation and no check engine light! I strongly considered Luuk's contactless version but he was quick to point out that it had only been tested on one car and it was sold on a buyer's own risk basis. I will probably send him my old pedal pot and get the contactless version at some point but I wanted this fixed with certainly so went for the new option.

Hopefully my experiences will assist someone with diagnosing their own problem.

Regards,

Neil

Nicely done mate.

You could have always tried this:

You pull and join together the white and yellow wires, its stops it throwing errors and going into limp mode, worth a try anyway.

I had joined the wires previously in the hope that it would fix the problem. In discussion with Luuk he suggested that the area around the idle stop postion was so badly worn that it was momentarily dropping below the minimum value recognised by the ECU and throwing a CEL. I think the reason I was not getting limp mode associated with it, is because the wires were joined as you have suggested.

Sure, its never going to fix the PP, so I think you did the right thing.

Also, there has been much discussion about whether you should bypass the limp mode or not, which is down to the individuals risk I suppose.

It's a contentious issue indeed Matt. In all the time I had the wires joined, I never had any problems associated with it apart from the CEL. In fact prior to this I had a couple of occasions where it went in to limp mode at a point in heavy traffic where it was far from safe.
