It also shows that even with 3 on the flight deck we are not immune from danger and that, at any point, sh!t can happen.

Even if there are three pilots, the damage can be done: He may in a violent way take the steering while taking off, or landing. Then, the crew has no time to react. No one can imagine what the man's mind will think to make a disaster. Prevention is the key. Psych tests i mean. Human soul can be turned into abyss.
It's true that airplane is the safest way of transport, but just imagine if the plane would crash in Nice, and not on the Alps. There would be thousands of victims.
It's so sad to see our world becoming so suspicious. We did our best to prevent terrorists and the terror came from the inside of the crew. And we now want securities to inspect the crew.

Let's not tar all pilots with the same brush, there are f*cking idiots in every field. It reminds me of an old Italian bloke sat on a hill overlooking a harbour. He says to his mate, you see all those houses by the harbour, I helped to build them. Do they call me Luigi the house builder? No! Do you see all the boats in the harbour, I helped to build them. Do they call me Luigi the boat builder? No! All those nets by the boats, I helped to make them too. Do they call me Luigi the net maker? No! You sh4g one sheep.......

Always find it funny how people have a fear of flying or the risks associated with terrorism etc...yet

Over 300 people EVERY month are killed on our roads...yet we drive and cross them every day without the blink of an eye.

If a plane crashed in the UK every month no one would fly.

For me Peter, its the fact the impending crash is out of my hands so I can make zero contribution to resolve the situation.

Couple that with the fact a plane accident is not instant, its sit buckled in your seat and contemplate whilst you wait to hit the ground, not nice, not nice at all and its one way I would not like to exit this world.

On the other hand, if I drive and get it wrong and end up crashing through the Purley gates backwards in a ball of flames, I will know that it was my error and I only have myself to blame.

That's an apples and oranges comparison though. You're suggesting that the number of people killed is comparable where I'd suggest that the number of deaths per passenger mile would be fair.

I have *no* way how to calculate how many planes would have to crash to make the numbers right :)

I can only speak of my own experience...I have three friends die on the roads and one relative...also informed far to many families of the death of a family member in a road accident...but never in an aircraft.

Oh and Easy Jet have just issued instruction to staff to ensure there is always two member of staff in the cockpit... so a longer wait for the tea and coffee now.

I have no fear of flying; pre 9/11 I used to have the pilot/air traffic radio on my headset as I could sleep aware of the progress made in the flight and usually got a heads up on chop so I could use the loo before the seatbelt light was switched on. We don't get that any more because it apparently could be used to coordinate a strike or some such. Apparently this latest mass murder has happened because he could override the unlock sequence! So build in an override for the override that requires an I put from three people is a button on each side of the cabin requiring simultaneous pressing whilst the door is opened manually...

These poor souls knew they were in trouble but could not cooperate to prevent the outcome.

A colleague and I discussed this at length today on the drive to and from work and deduced that on short haul and in planes like the A320 where simply there isn't room for a 3rd pilot then you have to use a member of cabin crew but let's face it they have to be big and strong enough to not be overpowered by a male Captain (or female if you want to be pedantic) so that rules out women then it brings into the debate of whether a male cabin crew (usually fruity) could handle the task or if all flights need some form of air marshall like in the US.

What amazes me is that terrorism is the reason we introduced kevlar doors and closed cockpits to keep the evil out but now we are worrying about what it is we were originally trying to protect and what danger lurks behind the other side of the door! Terrorism in a fate of irony seems to have somehow won again!

It's a sad, mad and strange World we live in!

You paint a really bad picture with that statement.

In the last ten years or so there have been instances of pilot suicide as mentioned on this thread. The experts say that flight MH370 was again pilot going postal, shutting off oxygen and then flying on with one last look at Penang. I fly more than most and this won't deter me at all as I put all my trust in them! It just seems cruel that the one preventative measure we put in place to stop 911's from happening has come back to bite us twice in the last year and 500 people have lost their lives which may have been preventable had some other system been put in place.

What is the answer? A galley and toilet in the cockpit? A fully autonomous flight with no human intervention (worse!!!!!)?

I like how all of this is to stop 911s Phil!! Those pesky fast Beetles!!

It's a sad case, if true. But it's impossible to stop these kind of rare events. You just can't legislate for every eventuality. Mitigate risk and get on with it.
