I agree, but it could be argued that they they didn't have a number plate when 'factory fresh' so they don't count whatever they look like!

My first event with the Maser and weather was aweful, Woody's pics make it look better than it was! Anyway, it was good to meet some of you guys and for those who haven't heard, the 'Modern' category of the concours went to the blue GranSport, G5 PRT.

Ian

Hi Ian, Great to meet you and your son at Stanford on Sunday and respect to you both for staying to the bitter end (literally) to see the awards handed out. Your GS LE did you proud. The interior was lovely and although I'm definitely biased, the winning 'Modern' was the third best car there. :D

Was the concourse sponsored by Autoshield? :)

Being a GS spod, it was great to see so many nice GS's line up....I was like a kid in a toy shop! Albeit one that it was rianing in.

Bit gutted really as I would have loved to have had a look in a few, particularly yours Miles. Next time, I'm sure.

I wasn't there and haven't seen the other cars in the flesh. I do however know, that the one I sold to Ian Popplewell ( Marios' old Gransport) was in amazing condition when sold a few months back and I would expect it to still be as so. Also the blue one which belongs to Marios and won, is in stunning condition. I endeavour to ensure all the cars I sell are as good as they can be. I have learned a great deal from Marios about the standard to which these cars should be prepared, and attempt to get all cars as close as possible, condition-wise, to G5PRT. It is a legal UK plate too, even though not the original one allocated when first registered. Marios did judge one or two categories of cars but never judges categories in which he has entered. I think it was judged by the Emblem guys amongst others. I heard Miles' car was stunning, looks lovely in the pics.

I didnt really get a chance to have a nose around either of them all that much, but the three mentioned looked great Dicky. All cleaned and waxed to the max!

I dont *think* , and will stand corrected, that the front plate on G5 PRT is legal. The size and font are both illegal, I think........I say that, as I have a similar plate on mine and think that technically, I could get a rollocking for it.

....it doesnt have a space either Dicky, in the front plate. Apparently, thems in those blue uniforms dont like that either......unitl the DfT issue their papers later this summer, when spaces can be removed :)

Woody, I misunderstood. G5 PRT is a legally owned plate, yet strictly speaking the spacing and font size aren't legal. I'm pretty sure a smaller plate is legal, so long as the font size is the standard size.

IIRC the Construction and Use regulations give a standard size for; the plate, the font and the spacing between the numbers and letters. I seem to remember that all plates should be the same size however many characters they have on them

See, I think is half the problem with plates - its not at all clear!

My understanding is, the total size of the plate doesnt matter, so long as the font is the right size, the spacing between the lettering (and groups of lettering) is correct and there is sufficient border space too. The plates do not have to be the full size, as far as I am aware.

The DfT are in consultation to allow removel of spaced from the plates, which apparently will be decised upon this summer.....something I will welcome :)

Apparently the standard size for 'oblong' number plates are 520 mm x 111 mm and must have the manufacturers details and the post code of the supplier displayed thereon. Failure to adhere to the regulations can lead to a fine of £1000, withdrawal of the number and failure of the MOT. However, there is no specified legal size but the plate has to be marked BS AU 145D so finding a small plate so marked could be the problem. (Some Rovers and Jags have those strange shaped plates that fill the sculpted panel on the boot lid and are BS marked). I suppose a way round it would be to cut down a marked plate keeping the bit with the mark and put your number on that. Good luck if you end up in court!
