The various autoroute companies have different charging strategies, but not all have a UK base and therefore ease of obtaining one for most people here.
ATMB for instance in the Alps have tags with discounted tolls in the mountain area (so we get 25% discount on the local motorways), and a France-wide tag with a 1.6 euro charge per month it is actually used with no charge for the other months. APRR/AREA have a similar deal. Trouble is, they have (I believe) French language only websites for actually signing up for a tag. They have plenty of info in English though, prior to actually signing up for one.

The SANEF UK lot just make it easy to use with a UK bank account, and take care of the exchange charges by loading the bill a bit. Still, it costs broadly the same as a cup of coffee per month to have the convenience of the system.

If anyone was wondering what happened to the bridge in Rouen:

From memory a lorry caught fire on the bridge and it was either tyres or chemical or something and the heat was so intense it melted straight through the bridge.
