Put a new thread about it Newton, I doubt people who didn't get a place are reading this thread...

I could always take it out in cash and leave it on the table...or is service charge generally go to the house?

The house will usually add it to the bill, making it rather less optional than it suggests. The place for the Goodwood meal did just that to me on the night - at least your Christmas meal place has let you know upfront!

Personally I'd rather not pay a house service charge, and give cash to the waiting staff instead.

We didn't go to an Italian at Goodwood!!

I was talking about the Italian we are going to in this thread, but yes, they are all catching on!

Don't mind paying a 10% service charge but for that I expect good service, if its cr@p then it should not be expected and paying up front negate the staff to give a ****

I went to a place yesterday in london 15% service charge...and what was the service??? Handing me a plate that the chef put down 24" away from my table close to the kitchen. Its just a big con £15 to pick up a plate, turn around and place it down twice...wish I had that hourly rate!

exactly!!
the waiters (my experience) were earning £40 each through tips on a fri/sat
with their basic they were cleaning up £70....not bad for students etc....that's £140 over the weekend
