I could always take it out in cash and leave it on the table...or is service charge generally go to the house?

I hate it when service a service charge is automatically added to the bill but if the service received was poor you are perfectly within your rights to insist it is removed from the bill - make sure they adjust the VAT element as well though as that is another trick.

Personally i think a service charge should be optional and a reward for good service etc.,.. I also think any moral employer should ensure their staff get the money from any tips/service charge. When we had the pub we took nothing from any tips it all went to the staff on duty that night including those in the kitchen which some people forget. It is also a good way of incentivising your staff to look after the customers.

I'd refuse to pay a service charge until after the meal, well within rights not to pay for the meal either, normally a deposit might be required for such a large party, but if the food is sh1t and the service cr4p they have us by the curlys.

If the food is not to ones liking that's not the staff out fronts fault. I'm not one to moan about quality I pay my bill give the waiter waitress a tip and they will never see my money again. All this talk about saving a couple of quid and it's not started yet. It's Christmas lets just enjoy it and enjoy the company we are with.

This is very true, its a nice place, I think I just find it cheeky they ask for the tip up front... I am more than happy to tip and normally leave more than 10%, their loss I guess.

I have 12 cans of Red Bull (substitute), think that will be enough, grab some more if you think not.
