I could always take it out in cash and leave it on the table...or is service charge generally go to the house?
I hate it when service a service charge is automatically added to the bill but if the service received was poor you are perfectly within your rights to insist it is removed from the bill - make sure they adjust the VAT element as well though as that is another trick.
Personally i think a service charge should be optional and a reward for good service etc.,.. I also think any moral employer should ensure their staff get the money from any tips/service charge. When we had the pub we took nothing from any tips it all went to the staff on duty that night including those in the kitchen which some people forget. It is also a good way of incentivising your staff to look after the customers.
