I'm more/better informed but would a roof mounted ASHP (thinking of a flat garage roof) be more effective than one that is always in the shade? If it's 'sucking heat' out of the atmosphere, I would have though that this to be true. Looking at some installtions, they seem to be floor mounted in 'out of the way places' .

Logically, you'd think so, and in truth if the air flowing through outdoor unit is warmer, more heat can be efficiently extracted.

However, in reality these systems have refrigerant circulating at around -28c and only require a 2 degree differential to produce heat. Therefore they can work all the down to -26c (the lowest recorded temp in England was -26.1c in 1982), this is why they're often put out of the way rather than soaking up the sun or radiant heat from a flat roof. In addition, some manufacturers warranty is invalidated if the unit is not easily accessible by an engineer. As ever, anything can be done, but other factors may dictate ideal location.

Irrelevant data without a comparison with companies that didn't donate.

All this says to me is 'Here's a number of companies that made donations to a cause and also think they know which way the wind is blowing <shrug>

'Connected to' 'Connected via' and 'bankrolled' mean 2/3 of **** all in this context. Business is always full of businesses connected to others. I recall The Vatican owning shares in Durex once. They didn't They owned shares in London rubber, but the statement is still 'true'

As some will be aware we moved into a 16c Cow Shed a couple of years ago. It costs lest to heat than my old 3 story 2001 town house.

As said... all down to insulation and good quality german boiler. We have underfloor heating and only use it down stairs and in the family room and living room... gets too warm otherwise.

We do spend a bit on logs, but the fire is mostly for ambiance and she like expensive Olive wood for the nice smell.

We would have gone for heat pumps but listing prevented a number of things and the bedrock is too shallow to allow for ground heat recovery.

Air source rather than ground source is your answer then! Always happy to pop down to the south west if you'd like one Peter ;)

Thank you for the offer.

For the foreseeable time we will use the gas (it is so efficient) but will look at an alternative if we are still here after that packs up or Greta et al ban anything with a flame.

She's a step ahead of you my friend! The boiler ban comes into effect in 2025, so give me a shout anytime after then

Yep it will be fun after that. Lots of Housing Associations are already having problems trying to get ahead of the game, say with putting in ASHPs but tenants are not using them correctly - turning them off when they are out during the day - and are then complaining about massive electricity bills.

Being an ex 'old spook', his network will still be alive and kicking. So I suspect there may still be some truth in this even if the scientists and politicians deny it for political reasons.
China is hiding something and it will come out in the wash eventually.

I occasionally pop back to this thread to see what is going on, and I usually find the same mix of conspiracy and complaining, and I can normally bring myself to just ignore it and move along. But this is just too horrible to let go.

What we have here is someone repeating that the Independent is reporting that the Telegraph is reporting that a 75-year-old geezer is trying to get some publicity for himself by claiming that the SARS-CoV-2 virus 'might' have escaped from a Chinese lab by accident after being man-made, entirely based on his glancing at an obscure paper about a candidate vaccine and misunderstanding what the technical term 'insertion' means to virologists. This whole chain is about as irresponsible as shouting 'fire' in a crowded cinema, and everyone involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

And before anyone gives me 'no smoke without fire' and 'old spook network' and 'may still be some truth' and 'the politicians will deny it', please just bear in mind there is NOTHING to this story - it is ALL made up nonsense. It might just as well be the Daily Mail reporting that the National Enquirer had reported that Elvis thought that the moon landings 'might be' fake because the Who had a drummer called Moon.

It is also not harmless 'speculation' time-passing' or 'comedy'. The President of the most powerful nation on earth is working himself up to trying to establish a fascist dictatorship, based on this sort of conspiratorial (xenophobic) nonsense, and to repeat such conspiracies is to be, in a small way, a collaborator in that that crime.

I know some have said 'wait for the crash', but I just lost out on a sealed bid on a small field at 26% above guide price and cash in the bank.

In a AONB with no chance of development or camping etc. Quite steep and only fit for grazing or fodder.

Obviously there is still lots of money about
