I occasionally pop back to this thread to see what is going on, and I usually find the same mix of conspiracy and complaining, and I can normally bring myself to just ignore it and move along. But this is just too horrible to let go.

What we have here is someone repeating that the Independent is reporting that the Telegraph is reporting that a 75-year-old geezer is trying to get some publicity for himself by claiming that the SARS-CoV-2 virus 'might' have escaped from a Chinese lab by accident after being man-made, entirely based on his glancing at an obscure paper about a candidate vaccine and misunderstanding what the technical term 'insertion' means to virologists. This whole chain is about as irresponsible as shouting 'fire' in a crowded cinema, and everyone involved should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

And before anyone gives me 'no smoke without fire' and 'old spook network' and 'may still be some truth' and 'the politicians will deny it', please just bear in mind there is NOTHING to this story - it is ALL made up nonsense. It might just as well be the Daily Mail reporting that the National Enquirer had reported that Elvis thought that the moon landings 'might be' fake because the Who had a drummer called Moon.

It is also not harmless 'speculation' time-passing' or 'comedy'. The President of the most powerful nation on earth is working himself up to trying to establish a fascist dictatorship, based on this sort of conspiratorial (xenophobic) nonsense, and to repeat such conspiracies is to be, in a small way, a collaborator in that that crime.

Non of that PROVES it didn’t come from a Chinese lab. I’m pretty ambivalent about the whole cakeandarse party but; we’ve had SARS, Bird flu, Swine flu etc come from that neck of the woods which, apparently, are worse diseases but how many times have the Chinese built 10,000 bed hospitals in 10 days before information started coming out about what they were dealing with. This gives an indication they KNEW beyond doubt that they were trying to cope with something completely different.

I know some have said 'wait for the crash', but I just lost out on a sealed bid on a small field at 26% above guide price and cash in the bank.

In a AONB with no chance of development or camping etc. Quite steep and only fit for grazing or fodder.

Obviously there is still lots of money about

Agricultural land is exempt from death duties, so if the guy who bought it is in bad health or of advanced years, it could make sense,

Which bit?
All of it.:D
Seriously though, we are all entitled to our opinions, even if we don't agree, which all adds to the rich tapestry of debate and this is what makes this forum such a great place. So for me, so long as we all continue to respect the differences in our views ( across the forum), then it positively adds to the discussion, which I think is a good thing. No opinion or view is necessarily right or necessarily wrong but it's always good to get different perspectives and I would encourage it.

In the words of Neil Godwin from The Office, let's agree you all agree with me.

That's my final word David, take the written warning and we'll draw a line under it....

Don't know if I should worry too much. As well as the 3200 GT, I have an old (1923) Vauxhall, and an old (1938) Morgan, which means I wash my hands a lot, anyway.

I believe breathing in plenty of fumes could help as well...

Our oil fired heating consumes between 5500 and 7000 litres of oil per year (depending on how cold the winter is) but that includes running an oil fired AGA 6 months of the year which consumes oil at a rate of around 100 litres per week. It drinks it like water ....unreal!
So what we do is when its really cold we supplement the general heating with 3 multstove wood burners to save on the oil consumption. They chuck out an awful lot of heat when fired up so best thing we ever did.
Wow....that is one thirsty sucker. Do you have a leak?

Our house is not big but a 4 bedroom detached house with a few extra rooms. We use a about 2500 lites of oil with maybe Rayburn on for 4-6 months giving hot water and heating to one extension part if you like.

We have 16 solar panels on the detached garage roof and that credits us with about 75-80% percent of our electricity costs. So pretty good and surprising. Not bad for a circa 400 year old cottage. Better than they old house that was a cavity wall insulated new build built 1969.

I will be talking to Dan I'm sure if we can get planning sorted for the new house build. It will be ripe for GSHP, solar and rainwater harvesting/storage systems.

Yes, of course everyone is entitled to have and express their opinions. If you think that 'China is hiding something and it will come out in the wash eventually', then I really can't object to you exercising your freedom to say it. And when those opinions seem to me (in my opinion) to be crackpot nonsense, I try to just let them go by.

But, it is my 'opinion' there is a difference between opinion and factual information; and a difference between opinion and logical argument.

So when you you express your opinion supposedly supported by 'authoritative commentators' and 'science', then that feels worth the effort to challenge, because that is not just 'expressing your opinion', but repeating dangerously plausible (but profoundly false) propaganda. When such nonsense is challenged in detail, and your only response to that challenge is to call it a 'rant', describe it as 'all tosh' and to invoke the 'we are entitled to our opinions' mantra, then I know that it is not a 'difference of views', deserving of 'respect', or 'positively adding' anything. And responding with 'tosh' really does not feel like 'adding to a rich tapestry of debate'. But that's just my opinion.

I suggest you take a long hard look at how you communicate with people. Being self righteous and sanctimonious are really not good qualities in my book.

It's a 3 story, 6 bedroom, 4 reception room place with 14ft high ceilings and built with 2ft thick stone walls. So it takes a lot to heat it up. Sadly it's the Aga which drinks the oil like water.
